Hi guys, I've been looking for a van (Vivaro 2008 probably) seems to be 400 odd ex AA vans on sale for the right sort of money.

All of em have an up n over tailgate rather than double doors - Anyone have any experience of these??

Or comments on pro's n con's?? I can't think of any reason NOT to buy one - over to the experts please...


P.S. They're all bright yellow -- will be like driving a giant wasp

The reason why barn doors are the most popular on a van is for easy loading and unloading using a forklift and for ease of unloading in a tight space as was mentioned in a previous post (most rear openings are pretty much square so a barn door is only half an opening where the tailgate is alot more.)

The resale value of a tailgated van is less than conventional doors as the demand is less.

We had the occassional special order where the customer stipulated a tailgate but these were factory build specials and were for people such as mechanics who could use an extra 'roof' whilst standing at the back of their van working. I think nowadays that companies find it better to ordered a longer hi roof van so their worker can work inside rather than under a tailgate.

A local windie has a Vito with a tailgate and is solid (no glass).

Most people carriers of the same van with barn doors come as standard with a tailgate and this doesn't cause many issues.

I had a tailgate on my Suzuki van when I first started which I honestly quite liked. Not being tall, I didn't bump my head on it like Vin. I think if this did happen I would have thought differently about it.

A few years ago we had a peugeot partner combi as our family car. The tailgate was enormous, and while it was handy if we were out somewhere, for a picnic or something and the rain came on, in most scenarios it was impractical. I wouldn't have a van with a tailgate for the same reason.

Have both a tailgate and twin rear Toyota,

Tailgate, roof rack fitted and ladders work perfectly well, providing they are not left over hanging, handy when it's raining the tail lift to a standard height, twist the dampener and it raises more, not really an issue for window cleaning.

Twin, great for hanging thing's on the back doors, other than that, no difference.

Not sure about resale values being different, but I only ever buy Toyota, so never search.
