Any Ideas?
« on: December 11, 2013, 08:28:37 pm »
Picked up a cushion seat cover (draylon)from a customers caravan base seat.
She has told me about a litre of cooking oil had been spilt on it.
I cant see any obvious staining but it does smell quite alot. one edge of the cushion is slightly padded. She has had to replace the foam as it was too bad. (i only have the cover).
What would be the best approach for this one?

Put it in a pillar case and stick it In the washing machine.

You will need a strong enough cleaner, possibly a citrus based prespray to break down the oils and then lots of rinsing. Of course this all has to be compatible with the fabric. You may need several cleaning cycles to remove the oils and odor.

Dralon is a trade name, originally a brand name registered by Bayer fabrics but now a stand alone  brand. An acrylic pile fabric with a cotton backing. The problem is with the cotton backing which can shrink. It is less of a problem if the foam is in the cushion as the foam will help with recovery of the cover anyway. Many people have machine washed cushion covers only to find great difficulty in getting the fillings back in, ending up with rounded edges and un-square cushions. I am always dubious of doing a treatment on part of something without the condition that the treatment may need to be carried out on the rest of the item.
If you do go down the machine wash route then make sure it is on a cool wash, but are you certain about the make up of the fabric as "dralon" is a very widely used description and very often inaccurately used. Dralon is a very resilient fabric and will resist most treatments other than extreme heat.

The problem with this is you are not dealing with a normal cleaning problem this is the same as dealing with a pet  urine on a carpet. Under normal circumstances you would never clean a carpet by pouring buckets of water onto it but to deal with some urine you do need to do this and totally saturate the problem.

My suggestion of the washing machine is a last resort but I've done Jobs  like this and normal pre- spraying & cleaning does not solve it ( it looks like you've cleaned it but it stinks)

We put our cushions in the wash monthly as we have 2 dogs who run around the garden then jump all over the suite, it does tighten them up and make them bend when put back on and they flatten out over time. The only problem we have had is the stitching snagging but the pillar case seams to solve this and offer some protection.

Like everything on here this is personel choice and not definitively correct.

The cushion cover is already damaged so anything you do can only be seen as attempting to rectify the damage.
I'd go with Mike's suggestion then stick the filling back in while it's still damp.
Impossible done straight away, miracles can take a little longer.

If you do change the appearance of the one cushion cover, no matter how little it would show up and be exaggerated against the others. This is why I do not like treating just part of an item, I would always tell the customer that the others might have to go through the same process.
We have all done thing that are not the norm or recognised proceedures but make your customer aware of the implications.
