Tar staining
« on: March 10, 2006, 11:19:58 pm »
Hi all I wonder if you may offer some advice on this problem. One of my local cleaning contracts have asked me if I can resolve a problem with tarmac staining to their newish carpets. Apparently they have been renewing a road surface adjacent to the contract and the young mothers who frequent the building have trodden and wheeled fresh tarmac onto the carpet I do not specialise in carpet cleaning although I do clean some during the course of my business. I have a Prochem Powermax.  But this is slightly different than what I am used to dealing with. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Kindest Regards

Mark, have a word with Martin Riley (hope I am spelling his name right) as he is near you and I am sure quite capable of helping you with the tar. Doug can help you with what you need to get it out as it isnt really that difficult to restore. The chemicals I use come from the US  so not much help for you. You will need a solvent and like I said Doug or anyone else should be able to help. Best, Dave.

Hi Guys,

White spirit is a good solvent for tar , just make sure the carpet is not bitumen backed tiles as you may also dissolve the backing.

Otherwise white spirit is safe to use on carpets but do use a little on a cloth and make sure you extract well.

Scott,

White spirit works better than the 'stuff you buy' because it is 100% active ingredient.

A gel will contain a thickener like a cellulose or gum plus a perfume .If you want sweet smelling white spirit use it , if you just want to get rid of tar , grease etc then use white spirit.

Ecospotter is isopropanol mixed with MS which will not be as effective as white spirit on tar and will cost much more.

Cheers

Thanks James that is very kind of you. I cleaned the area over the weekend  but I have noticed that it has been spread through to other areas of the building and the road works are continuing. Which I think will mean it will get messed up again. I am going in there today to see if they would like to resolve the problem properly after the road works have finished. I dont think there is any point until after that happens in in all there are in excess of a couple of hundred square metres of carpet which have been stained but they are a large charity and a bit tight on the money side of things. Although if you saw their new building you would think they have plenty of money I will know more this evening. What one are you doing I was involved in the B/Clean for the newest one in S/Street not with my Company though prior to my setting up on my own.
