So who else uses this, and how do you get on?

Did you ask the customer to pay this way, or did you tell them they had no option else get dumped?

Any other useful info please

I do.
Don't force otherwise decent customers to use it.
Force the messers, request the others. Ask rather than tell.

So, the customer gives you their bank details, you then give their details to gocardless, then when you clean their windows you contact gocardless and get them to debit money from customers account?

Not quite...
You get the customers email address.
You set up your account on gocardless.
From the 'dashboard' on gocardless you send an email asking for authorisation to the customer.
They authorise.
It comes back to you that they've authorised.
Then you take the payment.
You can set it to take the payment recurring. Most of mine are monthly so auto recurs.
I take the first payment straight away then set it to pay again on the 1st of the following month, then recur.

If you do extra's. Insides, gutters conservatory roof etc, you go into your dashboard, click 'take payment' and enter the additional amount you want to take.
It's a couple of emails to set up for each customer and perhaps a few customers saying you've taken payment early' etc but once set up-it's great.

i set the 1st of the month as it gives a chance to contact the customer first if a payment ever fails to get paid before you turn up to clean.

Should've said-the money leaves their account on (say) the 1st but you get it 5 days later.
You get an email if a payment ever fails but assume all is ok unless you get that email

Cheers Darren, most helpful mate... Next question lol

Does the customer have to autherise each payment? If they do then surely its easier to go bang at their door?  ;D

no J, they only authorise when they set up. I do not set my as re-curring, we push it as much as posible its great for messers, or those that genuniely forget, we say we only take payment AFTER a clean has been carried out, so when its been done and I do the paperwork,  I log into go cardless and simply claim any go cardless payments that are due.

Its a great system and the fees are very low too.

Its a DD and a customer can cancel at anytime, they get an email each time a payment is claimed, it actually leaves thier account aprox 3-5 days after you claim, (so they get a chance to juggle monies into the account if they need to) and then you get it on day 7-10, you are emailled when it is due to land in your account. You are also emailled if any payment "fails"

I would really recommend it as a form of payment.

Don't bother with the letter James.
You need their email to set up the payment anyway so just ask the customer for their email address them email them what you would've written on the letter...

I just put a wee note around all my customers and when I was collecting cash of a wee note saying

'We now accept payments by DirectDebit and why not earn yourself a free clean when you switch to DirectDebit'  It simple and I often asked them for there Email address anyway.   Make a reason for them to switch to DirectDebit,  Give them a Freebie, Half Price Clean or etc to make them switch.
