Carpet smelling
« on: October 20, 2013, 02:47:28 pm »
Cleaned a carpet last Sunday,PP tufted, synthetic backing.

After cleaning the guy booked to have his suite cleaned. He called me on Friday to confirm the time as he had forgot.

No mention of carpet smelling when he called.

Got a call today from same guy saying he had a really bad cat wee smell from his carpet.

He has no pets at all in the house.

He says he has had various people in and they can all smell it.whatever it is.

Ive been round and to be quite honest I cant smell anything at all.I gave the carpet a very fine misting of Cleansan and told him to see how that goes.

He still wants the suite doing on Wednesday.

Any suggestions as to what this could be - am I right in thinking that latex used to bond the backing in carpets can give of a smell.Having said this I cant smell anything untoward.

Any suggestions as to the next step if he says the smell is still there.

Its usually just a bloom of a mildew type fungi which grows in the base of the pile. This occurs with miniaml dampness as long as the temperature is right. Once all the dampness has gone the mildew dies off along with the odour. This can happen at any time but especially when the humidity is high and there is little ventilation in the room. Clensan, Formula 429+ and Microkill are the best products to deal with it.
Especially if doing rentals which are going to be closed up after the clean its worth putting some of these products in the rinse.

Have had this issue through the summer a few times when it was very humid.  Used Microkill.  All sorted.
