Owner operator - Max job size?
« on: September 19, 2013, 05:48:15 pm »
As an owner operator I occasionally get a job which is a bit too big.  I manage this in several ways: get some help, or split it over 2 days.

However, I've just put in a quote for a large(ish) commercial job with I've estimated as 6 days hard work.  I hope I don't get this one - it's just too much work.

As a sole trader, how do you handle this situation?

Thanks guys - I'm still waiting to hear back about the quote.

The offers of help are noted - that's the obvious way to go with this one...

Sounds great well done. first its a factor in the prospects mind when choosing a service provider as to how they will carry out the work. as they have to provide access. this is an added cost to them. so make sure you point this out when quoting and make it a important point as if they are inexperienced they might not have considered this and will thank you for pointing it out.

One point you need to think about is fatigue in your normal days work and setting aside rest time will cost you money again. fatigue can affect your standards.

This type of work can affect you work flow and adjusting your marketing and can cause loss of work because of the snow ball momentum effect.

I dont do any of this type of work and we do get calls for it because of these reasons plus having to wait to be paid.

As the other guys will say it can work if your the type of person that can handle it. I am not -) I think this business to work match is very interesting subject. its like when does cleaning become restoration? even if you just do carpet cleaning you cant be all things to all people. focusing in on areas within carpet cleaning like this type of work will give you an advantage over someone say like me that not set up for it. learning to say no to work is as important as saying yes.

Well done on being in the room to be able to quote that's great for you shows you doing something right.
