Hi all, i got my first tax return a few weeks ago and i really need to know what i claim back for fuel? do i just take a percentage or somthing?

i would say i use about 70% work..... thanks for any info guys

If it is a dedicated vehicle then you can simply put in all the receipts for fuel.

If it is part work part family vehicle then you will need to show some mileage use documented throughout the year.

The best practice is to note the mileage at the start and end of a working day and deduct the cumulative total from the starting mileage.

They will be interested as to how you came to that %.

I would suggest keeping records from now on and use that % as a guide.

Yes too right, 45 pence per mile under 10000 miles and 25p a mile anything over.

whats the best way of recording it? do i need a seperate little book with weekly mileage? i already have worksheets, earnings and expenses book, receipts.

My book keeper used google maps to find the distance to each area I work, now she knows my mileage for each day.

i made the same mistake of not recording mileage for my first year (last year) .

I just printed all the jobs off of george in date order and worked out the mileage from google maps .

Pain in the bum but lesson learned and i record it in aworka now.

excel is also good as there are mileage templates online .

Also I think if there is two of you in the van you can up the rate per mile to fifty pence.

start the trip meter each work day, and the difference is private mileage..

It shows that the vehicle is used for both, and gives you an exact business mileage each week..

I use the start and finish mileage for the week, because once I take off the business mileage, I am left with personal mileage, and as long as this can be seen, then HMRC are happy..
