just about to renew my insurance its 808 pound [ which im happy with ] but im hoping to have my partners brother doing a few bits for me at weekends as the van is idle , the insurance said it would be a extra 700 pound to add him , no way im paying that as he will only drive it now and then , ,, when we renewed the car insurance it was actually cheaper to have my partner insured on it so i was hoping to just pay a extra 100 quid or so on van for another named driver , is this right is it really that big a jump to insure someone else to drive the van

The insurance company knows that they have you by the balls. You are most likely tied into a 1 year contract with cancellation clauses.

The way they see it if you want to insure your brother in law it is cheaper for you to stay where you are and bite the bullet. Rather then pay their cancellation then go somewhere cheaper.

I think it all depends on the other driver, how long licence held, any points,age etc my premiums went up after a years no claims so i phoned them up and they said if i add another driver it could be cheaper so i added my brother in-law and it did go cheaper but he had a licence for years.

i think my bro in law has had licence about 8 years , but he is insured for his mothers disabilaty car so maybe this is whats bumped it up

It was a few years ago now but I asked my insurance company to insure a friend to drive my van initially for a 24 hour period when I needed someone to drive my van back from somewhere as I was picking a car up, they said he could be added as a named driver permanently to my policy no problems and at no charge.
Sounds to me like they are pulling a fast one on you becuase they know they can, makes your blood boil don't it ?

Our Insurance Company`s in the U K are just a bunch of takers.Speak to people who live in other countries and you will see how we get ripped off. Many other countries do not have to declare a second driver as if the second driver is of more risk than you behind the wheel. If this other driver is behind the wheel then why can you not have a discount for not driving. If you had three named drivers, all cannot drive at once.So why pay 3 times. Is your second driver an illegal drive. No he is licenced to drive by the power that be.|Go ahead a do some research it will shock you.Some countries like N ew Zealand and South Africa,and there  are others that don`t enforce insurance.They recommend having insurance, but if the quote is to high you don`t need to have one. Amazingly insurance costs are reasonable is these places and the none payout on policies is very seldom. You are not forced by law, you choose in the matter.I never paid more that =350 pound pa and I did not use my none claim bonus. My daughter or my staff would drive on the exact insurance. No problems.. Bare in mind many car are stolen and broken into  so that is a good policy at that  price. Then why must we pay through our necks.

it cost me around 300 to get an extra parttimer on my van policy ,3rd party fire n theft.  not 3 weeks later he wrecked the van ,but i got nearly all the premium refunded without asking .  worker was driving the van hard too,no respect ,

 i actually came out of it all pretty well as i got rid of him and the ageing van in 1 swoop (discovered hed started creaming off takings in those 3weeks)  and i take much more care with who i would let drive now,although i let my workers with no licence ,underage, let em drive off the public highway to get experience
