what is it???
« on: August 30, 2006, 05:49:43 pm »
Does anyone know off hand what this fabric might be.

It's my mums old sofa and she's getting rid so I'm going to practise with a few samples I have.

I've looked all over it (and under it) and can't find a label, I'll test the products beforehand but I'm just curious.

The first picture is the cushion and the second is the inside of the cushion cover

Cheers all

1st pictures a bit out of focus but it looks like a Chenille. Not usually any problem just do your colour tests first.

I would say chenille too, my only caution would be to exercise caution in the use of solvent spotters.
I clean carpets
I dry Buildings

We have a sofa with some cushions on that appear to be made of the same material. The label says "Dry Clean Only" so proceed with caution.

That said, I have removed the covers before now and hand washed in tepid water and they clean OK, although some dye does come out.

Dont worry about what it says. Most suites have those 'dry clean only' labels on just to prevent custys trying to clean themselves, then causing problems and complaining to the manufacturer when it goes pear shape. Its a get out clause, and I suppose from their point of view quite sensible.

Yes there are some suites than can only be dry cleaned but a professional cleaner can tell which ones! Although in saying that I have done quotes before now where other so called professional companies have refused to clean a suite (because they couldnt identify them corectly), and we have cleaned them with absolutely no problems, its bizar. No training ever, me thinks :P

Judging by the pics, wet clean should be fine. ;)

TEST! Is it natural or synthetic? Do the color test. Test for shrinkage. You said it was old. Many "Dry Clean Only" textiles are labeled as such as they have a water based flame inhibitor on them and "wet" cleaning would remove them. Others where dry clean only at the time but we cleaners hve to figure out how to make them look two weeks newer than new when they have been abused.
Anyone remember raw (Haitian) Cotton? X tagged in the early 70's. S tagged (dry clean) in the late 70's and then presto, haitian cotton shampoo's and extraction formulas showed up to save the day.
Test first, it will guide your path.

Being one of the old boy's on here I'd say uncut moket (sorry about the spelling its late in the day)
The only problem you will come up again'st is
1, don't use a high Ph
2, clean with cool water
And above all colour test in a inconspicous place.

In the early 80's I cleaned loads of these sofa's with no colour blead problems.
If unsure use a Micro Splitter.
