Thanks to the recommendations on here, I recently started using GetClicky to monitor my website traffic, as well as keeping an extra eye on my adwords account.

Since using it, several times I've noticed clicks that are being charged for on my adwords account, and searches not showing on GetClicky, or for example one search was for "Rug cleaners in Sheffield", and according to GetClicky, the IP was located in Sheffield (unsurprisingly). Now when I checked my adwords search terms, it said the user was in the next town over from me (in South Wales!). I'm not saying its impossible that someone in the valleys was searching for a rug cleaner in Sheffield, but GetClickys version seems to be more likely.

Anyone else got experience of similar discreprancies with Adwords? It's not a lot of money each time, but over a month it adds up.

Ash, IP address cannot accurutely locate geographical address;

Try this, go and copy and paste that IP into here and you will probably come up with another location altogether;

I did check with a 3rd party at the time (and again just now), and the IP is located in Sheffield.
And yes, I have targeted my ads to local area only.

Yes, when I asked the online help, they said they don't take the data from any 3rd parties into account?!

Can google offer any assurance that they are correct on location and the 3rd parties have it wrong?

How can google be more certain than the 3rd party.


On a seperate note one thing that annoys me is paying for users dumb behaviour, sometimes you will get 3 clicks from the same user as if they go back in their browser, we pay again! It should be one user one time charge in a set period eg. once per hour.

I've had similar things occasionally Ash.  Google don't want to listen they just fired back the stock answer you received.

Craigp, as I understand it you don't pay twice if they click through, then click back, then click through again.  I was led to believe Google can spot this and don't charge twice, I may be wrong but there was a thread on the Google forum about it.  I think that is another one of the reasons why you sometimes get a click quality rebate on your account.

Allan, I get 2 ,3 or 4 clicks from the same IP and search all the time.

You really don't think you do, do you ever drill down in your website tracker?


I think your mistaken, a second click is a second charge.

Could be someone using a UK proxy but I would have thought this would have been filtered out by your geographical preferences?

Add a column for invalid clicks on your dashboard to see this...

You may pay now but will get a readjustment on your account sometime down the line.

What I've noticed now in Analytics and GetClicky is something called secure search where you dont know what the searcher typed to find your site... a bit annoying

I see multiple visits from the same IP address yes.  I'll see if I can find the Thread on the Google that explained about how they deal with it.  If I recall correctly clicks on the 'same visit' to Google are not charged multiple times as that could be 'click abuse' but clicks at a later date do count as a second click and are charged.

Google must Like me as I get refunds every few mths! Put it down to Other CCers clicking on my ads more than once!
