Unblocking Gutter Downpipes 3/4 Storeys
« on: November 13, 2012, 11:10:05 am »
Anybody doing this from the ground with total success?

I can only imagine getting a pressure hose up there somehow and blasting with water,is this what the omni power poles are all about?

If anyone is using the carbon guttervac poles then are they man enough to handle pressure hose/weight of water and attachments?
I am seriously thinking of gearing up fully for commercial type gutter cleaning but at the back of my mind and from previous experience at lower heights it is often a "hands on" job so i feel a cherry picker could be needed for just one stubborn downpipe on a job and if i price a cherry picker into every job i might not be very busy.I`m looking for advice from anyone doing this type of work rather than the guy selling me the equipment to do it.

we use a power pole / high pressure lance powered by a 13hp pressure washer

Thanks for the replies,i had in mind the thinner type drain hose running up the outside of a pole and a U shaped lance.I`ve used the longer extending pressure lance(about 7m) in the past with the U shaped gutter attachment and that is difficult enough but at 3 to 4 storeys high i`m finding it hard to imagine the right kit for the job that would still give a reasonable amount of control working alone.

Nameless, you go up the downpipe from ground level, not from above.

I thought that might be the case but it seems fraught with difficulty.

I feed it in by using a pole with a hook on top. Once its in it propels its self.its Has 3 jets which face back so pushing the hose down. Its a bit of battle for the first meter.

So, it needs to be about thirty feet long to reach the top then another five feet to come down the pipe past the 's', plus a pretty good power washer and it still won't shift roots. I'm guessing you've not done many yet?

The biggest worry with the high stuff is - what are you going to do when you dislodge that 's' bend at those heights (which you will trying to yank all that drain jetter out from below).

I do two storey stuff and simply get the ladders out to check the 's' bend is clear - there is no way a vac will clear the really long swan necks. I've done 50' with the vac but can't guarantee to clear down pipes.

I`ve done too many and most where a guttervac would have been useless.Last year i spent 3 hours on a stretch about 40ft long.Backside sat on the roof, boot heels on the outer lip of the gutter and hacksaw in hand removing a tree root system from a commercial building. Most of the work i`ve done has seemed to involve some dubious ladder placement/angles and often required ingenuity and a contraption of varying tools.I know all about dislodging end caps, downpipe connections unable to be de-coupled and other ones that tumble apart on the first touch.Often its only the downpipe thats causing a problem, the one i did last week was compacted over a period of many years probably starting with the first few lumps of dislodged ridge tile cement but it was so solidly compacted it nearly needed hammering out.The recent monsoons have left a lot of gutters showing their weaknesses but has often left the channels nearly totally clear.
My interest in the guttervacs stems from a request for gutter clearing on 3 storey apartment blocks, guttering in good condition and there is a decent gap between the bottom tile and the edge of the gutter. So the guttervac could be an ideal solution apart from my downpipe concerns. Thanks to the forum these concerns are diminishing.
I`ve made my mind up though, the guttervac is just another tool that can be used  but falls well short of being a total solution.I now  see them primarily as a maintenance tool and/or a solution to awkward access gutter runs.
Using them for 3 storey work has the potential to unleash a nightmare scenario where only a cherry picker could access some pipes/gutter etc. dislodged by the gutter vac and the property owner bringing in someone else at your expense to remedy the situation.
I`ll only go further into this market if i can provide the total solution including worst case scenario`s so i have a bit of adding up to do and a bit more research into which or how many IPAF qualifications are required.

You can do the three generally required IPAF types in one day. I did them in March this year, 1b 3a and 3b. Allows me to use booms, scissor lifts and mobile elevated platforms up to 7.5 tonnes.
