Noro Virus...
« on: October 29, 2012, 03:18:14 pm »
Hi all,
I got a call from a kids nursery that have had an outbrake of Noro Virus, and want me to clean the carpets.
Does anyone have any pointers as to what to do.
I would think, apply Microsan and or Cleansan, but do I need to use protective clothing , mask, etc.
If so I dont think I would want to do it incase i come down with it myself!
thanks
Ben

PS - tnx to Simon for some help.

Noro Virus is not a specific organism but a group of viruses which lead to gastro enteritis. Microsan would be the better of the 2 you mention but Formula 429+ is also very good especially for wiping down surfaces as it has a residual affect.
Simple precautions are all you need. This is usually transmitted by touching infected surfaces, Not washing hands after the toilet is the main cause of transmission.
Wearing nitrile or latex gloves and overshoes should suffice. Just try and avoid touching your face when working. I would pre-spray the carpets with the anti microbial first allow to dwell then carry out a normal cleaning process. You can help things by also having a trigger spray of the same product and wipe down door handles, switches etc. (spray the cloth not the switch). Also advise them that any upholstery will also need cleaning. Also they should be having everything the kids come into contact with cleaned as well. Light fogging with 429+ is a good way to try and deal with any awkward items such as plastic kitchens, ball ponds etc. Explain to them that regular cleaning can help prevent these outbreaks happening.

We've just done a primary school today for same reason, we always use Chemspec Formula 429+.  We got  the job, even though we were a bit more than another firm, as we had included the info that it's the NHS Smart Product winner and the NHS preferred product.

We promote this to nurseries and playgroups when we look at cleaning.  We tell them we'll issue a framed certificate to say it's been done so they can proudly display it on their board in the area where parents collect the kids.  It works a treat :-)

Infection control requires the building to be evacuated for 48 hrs, then cleaning can progress.

Is that 'written up' somewhere on a website so we can refer to it, or link to it in tenders?

That's not necessarily the case. We do norovirus on ships quite regularly in compliance with the port health authority and the clean up is done between cruises which is only a matter of hours.
You're also not meant to work in another public building for 48 hours after you've worked in an infected area.
The biggest risk to you personally is hand to mouth so wash your hands before eating, smoking or drinking and wash down your equipment thoroughly afterwards.
