i was asked to carry out a builders clean on exterior windows by a firm we have cleaned for in the past, however last time we had use of a cherry picker. the q.s seemed really anxious that we cleaned asap as its handover day today he wanted me to bring in risk assesment's and method statements for job i've not seen and wanted ground, first and second floor windows cleaned off a ladder, not just squeegeeing but scraping and using cream cleaner etc

i turned him down saying i'm not putting my staff thru risk of using ladders to third floor

I was in chester today and took a look for you. How long have you known about the job? Its insane for them to ask people to go up ladders at that height for a company their size.

yeah dean thats the one mate they rang me friday i was meant to go saturday but ive been ill so delayed it but i remembered him saying about ladders so i thought f*** it cant believe a huge construction company would have such little regard to ladder work i thought they were banned from construction sites

This is my general rule too Andy. Although I made an exception last week for one of my small commercial custies who are having their own house built and who need the insides to be cleaned.

There is always so much scope to go wrong - underpricing; scratched glass/cills; too much time; managing expectations. "While you're here can you just ... ". That sort of thing.

you need to be doing 3 storey ladderwork every week to cope with that confidently/safely

id quite happily climb a ladder to 3 storey coz i used to fit fascias so used to going up to gable height and had it been a domestic id have prob cleaned it but not having a large construction company expect me to clean them at short notice without a cherry picker with there budgets coz they have left it till last min to sort a competent cleaner

Very wise, we undertake lots of build cleans, and never use a ladder, we liase with them to use the scaffolding while there, failing that a cherry picker, where they supply a lift/driver.

I always refuse to do very last minute builders cleans unless it's been agreed before hand and it's either off the scaffolding or using a cherry picker.

The problem I found using ladders (up to 2nd floor only and only then if I thought it safe to do so) is that with ladders, it becomes unpredictable as to how long it'll take. There's nothing worse than using ladders and being harassed by a foreman/supervisor/contractor to get a move on and then you find windows that are awkward or impossible to get to.

Now, the only ladder I will use is a 7ft A frame for ground floor work if needed. Anything higher than that - forget it. It's not worth the potential accident or H & S infringement.
