I have build up quite a customer base and at the minute I am constantly flat out catching up, now the days are shorter and with worse weather im sure to come i want to make sure i am prepared fro the winter, this is my first winter WC'ing and am thinking about maybe insulating the van (removing plylined walls and fit some insulation maybe?) also maybe fit an immersion element into the tank to have the system lukewarm, anything else i should be thinking about doing as i want as little down time as possible over the next few months.

The weather has to be very bad to affect you. First thing is to keep the van from freezing overnight. If you can keep a heater in it then that is the best route.
Take some salt, rock salt out, trad the doors, leave the first floor window over the front door and just use your common sense. If the day time temp is below -2 then forget it.

I would agree that once it goes below zero you always run a risk of things going wrong.
The best thing for NEXT winter is to save up money as a back up

Plus don't take the ply off the van sides - it's a good insulator. Just screw celotex 50mm to it.

its all about self motivation. weather wont stop you working if you have the right setup. if its raining i get wet like today but got soaked. if it snows i get cold and wet. if its sunny i sweat.
unless theres settled snow or its -3 or below there is no reason for me not to not work.
Heater in van over night or for an hour before you leave on full blast does the trick, flasks of boiling water in case of hose freezing. cuppa soups and im away. last year i only lost 4 days due to weather which i can live with. im hopeing this winter will be the same.
i do live down south though and appreciate that up north you boys get it rough. UNLUCKY

Tomcrowther  you dont work if daytime temp is below -2 i take it you dont work much in the  winter ,  I have worked when temp is -4  avoid connys and porches when their is a risk of freezing on glass as they are the coldest . 

even the previous really bad winters with heavy snow and ice on ground for weeks i only lost a few days each time . Mike

Pack a snow shovel. A good one. A big bag of salt too.

Do your normal round and offer to clear paths for a tenner a time.

being an ex truck driver.why don't yous get a night heater fitted.it runs off your fuel system(doesn't e much) and it can be temperature controlled .no more frozen pipes guaranteed.
