Is it me or is this slow connection?

Am I the only one that finds logging in here dead slow?

I seem to be getting this 'maintenance mode' message and the pages seem really slow.


Is it me?

I found it slow last couple of days, but then I uninstalled some software (stupid Norton Ghost), and its all fine now.

I find this site very slow at times. Especially through the day.

I have a very good connection. I have pinged the site and get high latency. I also did tracert and found one of 21 hops reading 1837 ms.  Its like being on dial up connecting to Australia or somewhere very far away  :(

Ok. Ping = latency. That is how long it takes to send a packet of data and get it back from a site or another computer on the net. Its measured in milliseconds. The lower the number the better the connection.

Tracert will tell you the route your signal takes to get from your computer to a site. There will be a number of "hops" these are servers that take you from one place to another. It will also tell you what the latency of each hop is. You can then see if there are any "bottlenecks" in the route. (and it can have other uses)  ;)  NOT that I would know about any of these  ;D

You do it from the dos prompt. Open the dos prompt window.. type in ping www.cleanitup.co.uk hit return and you can see your ping

Do tracert the same way only type tracert instead of ping.

Very secure sites wont allow you to do this though :)

How can Admin correct the slow-load problem on the site? I've often wondered why this one is so slow when compared to the 'other' site.

Ian, its normally the hosts, i run a number of forums and even though hosts in the USA are further away, they run a "bigger pipe" (which is the connection to the net from the hosts setup) and they are faster

normally UK hosts are not as good as them in the US

BUT

sometimes you will find a certain "jump" in the USA is slow, this can be for a number of reasons, normally when they are having problems

As far as I can see this forum is hosted by a company called Hurricane Electric Internet services.

They probably host many sites like this one. It is their servers that are causing the bottleneck. The worst hop that I am getting now is 447 ms which is still slow. Better than the 1837 I was getting earlier but still slow. The company is based in Holland but the servers they run could be anywhere. There really is nothing that can be done about this by admin.

About the other uses Ian.. I will have to ask my mates son.  :)

What admin need to do is to highlight to posters to be more "forum friendly" lots of graphics and unnecassery smileys can slow connections down for all.
I also run a couple of forums and telling people to be more forum friendly helps all, and none of them run as slow as this, sometime i click off cause i cant be bothererd to wait, anyone else do this?

Chris, I have to say this is why I started this thread.  It really pes me off the waiting.

Why I wait at all is becasue I believe there to be some good quality stuff posted here - among the drivel!   ;D


Shame to have this site lower down the list of 'favourites' that some others.
