transit battery

just had a new starter motor fitted to my transit also put new battery in it ,

what is the little black pipe for that fits into side of battery as my new battery does not have a hole for it .

and also when start up van it makes a rattle ,squiky noise ,  but than starts up ok 
anyone know what it is cheers

Hi The pipe was to vent off hydrogen gas from the battery acid to a safe place. As hydrogen gas is expolsive.
If they have fitted a new battery then the chances are that its a Non venting type.
The screeching noise? Could it be the alternator belt slipping?
