check the dipstick and see how much its using. it would be rare for a diesel to burn oil unless its done a lot of miles .

how old is it micky?i have a 12 year old kangoo thats just passed its MOT.it needed a few minor repairs and i got the garage to change oil and air filter.mine smokes a little on start up but is fine after a couple of mins.

i just use mine for work(work radius mainly 5 miles).its done 137000 MILES!i reckon ill get another year out of it at least!!

im getting a car soon so ill do even less miles!i average around 4000 miles a year in the van.
price higher/work harder!

smoking when starting up is not usually a symptom of oil burning through wear. That usually occours more when the engine gets up to temp. Any good mechanic is going to be able to tell you what it is likely to be pretty quickly.

The simple fact is that modern diesel engines that don't have the oil changed regularly ( and with good oil) are at serious risk these days. Its starting to make second hand cars and vans a lot more risky. In the old days, what you saw was what you got but not now.
