Just changed the tyres this morning on the little van (old winter tyres were worn out)

Just wondering if anyone else on here has them and did they do the job in the snow/ice?

Hi AS - we had Goodyear ultragrip 8 tyres on before, got 2 full winters out of them (normally change them 1st November to 1st April each year  so thats 5 months each year, or 10 months total driving from them, covering 300 to 400 miles a week.

very good tyre, definitely pleased with them but couldn't get them this year so opted for the Vredesteins, just wanting to know what anyone thought of them.

I assume everyone changes their tyres in the winter?  If you don't you are asking for trouble.

never had winter tyres before, but coming round to idea as have spare set of 15 inch alloys was going to sell. don't think most people have them tho. didn't realise they improve grip even when cold but not icy.

trying to think how long tyres last normally.....about double that? do u just have them on drive axle?

have them on both axles, only thing that keeps you on the road.

Check with insurance about winter tyres - our insurance is actually lower because we use them in winter.  Winter tyres are of a different compound that stays soft in the cold weather, normal tyres harden up and therefore give less grip, also the tread is much more aggressively cut to grip in snow and they also perform much better in wet conditions.

I reckon we got 15k miles from last set - would have only changed fronts but because I couldn't get same tyre I changed the lot - I can't have 2 different tyres on the van, it does my head in.

Got the big van tyres changed start of November, was able to get fronts for it at £130 each, rears were ok.

Winter tyres are great but might be worth checking your insurance policy. There was an article last year about some insurance companies deciding that snow chains were a modification and not paying out in the even of claim. Mate had a Peugeot 605 hdi that was supposed to run on 'W' rated tyres that cost a fortune and allowed you 168mph despite the fact the diesel version only did 129mph. He checked with his insurance company about using lower rated versions and was told that using non-standard tyres not in accord with the manufacturers specs would invalidate the insurance.

Utterly stupid but they wouldn't budge.
Might be worth checking out.
