when I first put together a wfp a few years ago I fished out an old hozelock from a skip. I thought it was curtains for it a few months ago, but managed to replace the spindle from another old one.
It has earned £xxx xxx over the years that I have had it.
I don't recomend waiting until you find one in a skip, but just want to say that they are just as able to do the job as some of the fancy priced reels you see about the place.

Got my hosereel from P. Freedom and has served me well for over a year now with no hiccups. As for free or fixed? Well, I started off with pulling reel out of van and plonking it on the ground, then thought i'd have a go with reel fixed down in the back of the van and, its so much easier fixed that's how I left it

I've now got a metal one fixed in the back of the van - which is better and easier than when i was lifting my hozelock trolley in & out.
A couple of fellas on here have mounted the wall mounted hoselock reels on the inside of their rear doors - which looks pretty good

If you mount the hose reel on a piece of mdf/hardboard or whatever, you'll have the best of both worlds. It wont move very far whilst in your van but can be lifted out onto the ground if needs require.

the pure freedom reels are by far the best engineered and well put together having changed to fixed after
2 years of 'non' fixed i would never go back to 'non' fixed its backbreaking.
as with most things - go for the best you can afford quality tools should last a lifetime and make life easier
every day - i am willing to bet i use half the effort winding up my hose on a decent metal reel than a cheapo
plastic one...

Ive got my tank on a skid plate which houses my pump & battery , Ive boxed it in and bought a qaulity hose reel from gardiner £180 i think it was so ive bolted it on top which gives me alot more room in the back of the van for my mower also its so easy to reel in !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we got Gardiner hose reel. seems to do the job well enough. I lift ourselves out, can point them any direction suits. surely if fixed its awkward if can't point back doors the direction your going with brush, ie if parked along street. doesn't it all get tangled in pile on floor?
also our van (caddy) not really wide enough to reel in 2 reels if fixed on van bed.
