Just to let you know that we're looking into the missing posts issue - it's certainly not being done intentionally by us......

Hi

I think we've got to the bottom of the missing posts issue!

What can happen with some 'other' forum software is that an administrator or moderator can change a members email address to one of thier own temporary email addresses and then apply the remind password option. This emails the existing password to the new email address without the genuine member knowing. Then the email address can be changed back again and no-one is any the wiser. If you know the members (or moderators) username elsewhere then you can attempt to log-in using the same password. Often people use the same password for multiple accounts and once you have it that's it.

Some other forums have 'questionable' moderators and administrators to say the least. All our moderators should now have changed their passwords here so the missing posts should stop. Our system is different from others because it doesn't email existing passwords, it simply asks you to create a new one. Having said that, there is probably a way to hack into any forum if you're determined enough and have nothing alse better to do!

The important thing is to bear in mind that if you use other forums and have the same password then it can be retrieved by thier moderators and it may be used to log in to your accounts elsewhere. It is worth considering where you use the same password and what the implications would be if someone knew it. It's probably also appropriate to remind all members that all forums are used at your own risk!

Unfortunately, again, it seems that not all forums are as professional as they claim to be!

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike,

I would have thought it was just admin that could do what you described?  If not can't you change it so that it is only admin, especially with you having quite a lot of moderators coming and going.

Can't you track down the culprit in your admin center, in the users online logs??  You could check on the activity of your moderators.  You could even check on the activity of moderators from other forums.

Vinnie,

Why cant you say who or how the problem has arrisen ?

You are dealing with peoples personal and private information here. Mike quite rightly pointed out that some people use the same memorable password to act on these forums and if passwords have been attained then the consequences could be financially high for some who shop/bank on line.

Do you know what bothers me the most - its that this email info may have been unknowingly sent in good faith via leters/leaflets etc shared on these forums and used where emails are kept private.  >:(

Can't you lot sort out your issues somewhere else.
If it's idle banter you want, go to the idle banter section.
if you want to challenge one another's professional integrity, sort it out by email or on the phone or in the pub then tell us how you've cleared it up if you want.
But it doesn't do anyone's image any good cat calling here in the public domain.
That's what failing egos do in the tabloids.
I know the weather is bad but you've got better things to do.

Pj ;)

Shame really.

All fourms offer great advice alot of the time, and you pick up some great ideas from them.

I even use Matts forum on the DIY side of things.

I think your a fool if you dont use them and whom ever is doing this must be banned from all forums really, it does them no good when things like this happen.

which last month had 100k on it due to a property deal!!

all i can say is change your password NOW if you use the same one for all things

I cant even give you a clue how i found it etc as this might lead to someone else getting the info
I have said enough

Change ya passwords

Vince

the leak has to be stopped and then  you can all see the damage

Hopefully it's sorted now, so thread locked.
