Fish tank heater with thermostat?    Won't get water hot but will be frost free...

The ebay one looks a bit lightweight . There was one on the market some time ago which I think was referred to as a " bucket water heater " I remember seeing one in use it Jamie's place in C

I looked at Ebay ones a few months ago but the ones I saw came from Eastern Europe so had safety doubts. Also how to you keep them off the plastic etc

Yes ... i wondered about the eastern european one too  :)
At least the Hong Kong one has three pin plug .. earth etc with

This one seems to be the standard on most American CC sites ... never seen it in 230v ... although i'd say its exactly like the e-bay , just with an additional heat sheild .

A timer plug socket could be  an alternative to a thermostat .

Steve,
It all depends on what you are trying to achieve. If it's just to keep water above the point where it starts to thicken (around 4 degrees) then a couple of large fish tank heaters will do the job, which will be a few hundred watts.

If you want 'heated' water then electrically you're going to need something with a lot of ummmph. That might be the e-bay one mentioned by john at 2kw, although I wouldn't leave this one all night.....it will burn out by being on constantly. So what you'd need to do would be to put a timer into the line so that it came on around the 4am time, given you 3 or 4 hours before setting out.
But you would need to do your own tests to find out the temperature of the tank water at different ambiant temperatures because that will change over the months.

Final warning. I'm not a great advocate of 'hot water' on cold glass during winter months. You'll be putting glass under extreme stress which some types can take whilst others will crack.

Ian Rochester has a heated system. Don't think he's had any issues. I would imagine by the time the water travels down the pipe and through the brush it is only warm as opposed to hot. Maybe he can enlighten us.

I bought a gas water heater that was advertised on here last week. Cost £179.

It's brilliant they usually are used by window cleaners to heat the water as it goes from the tank to the pole

Rather than heat the water in the tank buy one them.

 I will find a link
