I've got a thin Unger pole and was thinking about using 2" or 3" drainpipe to fashion a carrier out of so I don't put it into and out of the car all the time.

Any tips as to how to fix it to the roof bars, (which I don't mind drilling.) are there special clamps etc. or do I just drill through and bolt them?

downpipe brackets, BUT put a screw or bold through the bracket and the pipe (this will stop it sliding forward when you break)

do it on both brackets

I carry my Ettore pole on the roof rack by using 2 Terry clips bolted to rack, it is easy to get on/off. Make sure that you use clips to hold the pole tight for braking or perhaps accelerating!

Failing all that, Halfords sell clamps especially for the job at 9.99 a pair.

we use normal 3" downpipe and brackets drilled into roof bars no problems as yet and a lot cheeper

Thanks folks - job done 'safto! (It was raining and I've got a carport!)

Went to Wickes bought 2.75m length of black 3" downpipe (£4.69) and a spout end (45 degrees) (£3.39) plus two downpipe clamps.(£2.10 the pair) Also some M6 x 40mm bolts. (£1.59 for 12)

Drilled roof bars and bolted on the clamps. Clipped in pipe and put on end spout -  to stop pole sliding forwards - open end facing downwards.

Drilled tiny holes for self-tappers to securely fix clamps to pipe and spout end to front facing pipe end. Screwed in self-tappers.

Slid pole into pipe - when fully closed (top 3 sections) about six inches sticks out the back.

Drilled a hole in the back of the pipe to put one end of a very short bungee strap in and the other end goes into one of the holes at the end of the thinnest tube of the pole. (This gently tugs the pole into the tube so that it won't slide backwards if I accelerate up a steep slope.
