Dumped by my insurer
« on: October 27, 2005, 07:56:55 pm »
My business insurance premium is due for payment next week. I had a call from my broker this morning informing me that AXA were not renewing my personal accident policy.
I have not taken a penny off them in 10 years. The policy itself was nothing spectacular just paid £200 a week for a year  if I had an accident while working and couldn't carry on my trade. I asked My broker for an explanation and he said that AXA were no longer covering window cleaners for accidents. Somewhat ironic considering that I have been using WFP for the last 2 months and the new regs are now in force.
AXA is no minnow in the insurance business, and I find their decision rather worrying. Surely the risk to window cleaners has never been less. Who the hell makes these decisions? Our trade has never been as safety concious as it is now.
Do any of you buddies know of an insurance company that will cover us for accidents at a reasonable premium? Wfp users pose no greater risks than postmen. Dai

Hello Dai

That's not good news.  Out of interest can you say what the premium is and what age group you are in?

I understand if you don't want to disclose this info - I was thinking of getting similar cover (if it's available anywhere now of course) and wonderd how much it's likely to cost.

Does the Fed offer any cover?

John, This was an AXA policy where you could buy units. To start with you paid £25 for every £50 a weeks cover. I paid £100 annually, this bought 4 units of £50. This paid out £200 a week for a year. They stopped issuing this policy years ago, but because I kept renewing they had to honour it.
The decision not to cover window cleaners for personal accidents is a new one and not age related. I'm 63 by the way.
What is worring me is AXA is a very big company, will others follow suit?
This happened with taxi/ mini cab owners untill there were very few companys offering premiums. The result of this was a doubling or trebling of premiums. DAI
