A CRB of some description IMO... I reluctantly went for a Host CRB and have never looked back. I've sold the Oreck Orbiter, but I am keeping hold of the OP machine I have..... :)

If I only had one machine for carpet and hardfloors it would have to be a rotary, you can do anything with the right control. You may find you want a CRB as well however, they aren't great for hardfloors but they are more gentle which helps on 'newish' wool carpets.

a dedicated machine is always going to be better, this makes the agitation machines better for purpose than a rotary.

my host had nothing on my powrfilte rotary with stiff brush, really, the host wouldn't touch trashed lets or greasy restaurants by comparison.

However, many rotaries only have softer brushes available which flop too much.
