is price fixing unethical
« on: June 19, 2011, 08:07:59 pm »
Well while every one is going on about not undercutting, even though it is perfectly legal and up to the individual to decide.

on the other hand I believe price fixing is illegal but from the views on here it would seem most would gladly overlook that minor point and have everyone charging the same ;D

It happens in other trades Stu.
I remember doing a plumbing course years ago where the instructor teaching the course was discussing rates.
The example he gave was renewing a tap washer which is a 5 minute job, he said in the majority of cases it would be classed as a minimum rate charge for a job. At that time the minimum rate charge was £30.

I know it does I had the same when doing a tiling course. but at the end of the day anyone can charge what they want, and crying about undercutting isn't going to change that.

Gas, electricity, water companies and banks charge high prices because there is very little competition !

If you have more choice you generally get cheaper prices.

I believe that free enterprise is exactly what it says...

We can charge as much or as little as we choose for our services. It is up to the customer to accept or decline.

In answer to your original question, I don't believe price fixing comes into it on an industry basis. Why should it? If individuals choose to fix their prices, it's up to them.

Is wanting to earn a good living and feed yourself and family unethical?

There is pretty much a standard rate for houses in your area. It varies dramtically across the country.

Any1 that wants to work for less can do

I'd thought that price fixing was when huge companies like breweries, supermarkets  or oil companies get together and agree to charge fixed prices so they avoid getting into a price war. That way they agree not to compete with each other, but rather to divide up the pie amongst themselves.

Now THAT is unethical.

What most of us do is to decide on an amount that we need to charge in order to earn a decent wage and give the customer choice whether to take it or leave it.

If your price is very similar to my price it just shows that we both value our time and effort the same.

That is perfectly ethical.

Anyway, I don't believe that price comes into it a great deal with the best customers. It's whether they like and trust you or not.
