Sales and Marketing Team?
« on: February 12, 2011, 03:16:06 pm »
I am continuously ambitious and will probably never stop building my business?

I am moving to a larger house as I don't have the room to run the business where I am anymore. My new place has a potential small office so I am going to employ someone I know (ex-marketing at Thomas Cook) to do some commercial marketing whilst my wife focuses on residential marketing and sales.

I think theres a few of you that have a marketing team in place...........basically I know how much it could make a difference but was just curious to hear from those of you that have succeeded with it and may have any suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Don't want to dampen your ambition but before taking on non productive staff to market your biz
you would be better to keep building up your rounds and take on staff to clean etc..
also things like safe contractor are required to get onto registers like Mitie.

if your going for more local stuff - care homes, hotels, schools just do some cold calling and speak to
the person in charge of facilities or maintenence  it's a better responce than phoning them.

not knocking your friend but 'marketing thomas cook' is a far cry from your biz - find someone who can sell!
they will sell your biz and know how to close a deal not just sit in a office

just my thoughts

Taylor & Taylor,

how much work would you want this person to bring to you per year ?

Example, how many opportunities would you want them to allow you to quote for ?

Also how much would you pay them if you employed them ?

please answer as i may have an idea.

I think you right to take on marketing staff, they are productive as their role is to increase awareness of your business and bring new business in. Do you use foot canvassers if so how will this interact with other marketing. I also think you should look at having a 12 month marketing strategy.

They are only initially coming in on a part time basis. I don't have a big budget as just put the second van on the road so it's relying on family for marketing.

Archer I am open to ideas ........ maybe you could text me tonight what you have in mind? Unable to chat tonight but intrigued?

Most businesses have a business plan in which they outline financial, strategic goals for the forthcoming 12 months. which should signpost where you want the business to go. Every business should also have a detailed marketing plan where all facets of marketing are in harmony complimenting each other.

A marketing plan should outline target markets, co-ordinated approach to market, and objectives/ results to be achieved.  If your approach to marketing is controlled rather than scatter-gun the likelihood is better results will be achieved.

I am in the process of writing a marketing plan that identifies all that you mentioned but I hadn't yet but a time frame on it. But understand why it's necessary.
