HF5 RO Membrane
« on: December 16, 2010, 05:42:48 pm »
I've just bought a new HF5 RO membrane from June at GAPS WATER, and what a difference it has made to the quality of the water we are producing.

I've taken the system out of the van and turned it into a static system in our workshop, the old membrane was taking the reading down from 170ppm to around 030ppm.  The new membrane is taking it down to 002ppm and producing pure water at the rate of around 90ltrs/hr (1.5ltrs/minute).

The big bonuses of having the system in the workshop and out of the van are, firstly it's not freezing up, secondly we can fill the van in less than 2 minutes in the morning with a 360ltr/min submersible pump and 2" outfeed hose, thirdly if we run out during the day theres water ready for us to go again straight away.

Wish I'd done this years ago.

What water pressure you you running at Ian.  I have a new 40" and it's only taken it down to 016 TDS.  Still a lot better than my merlin though.  My pressure is around 45-50.  Not optimum but workable.  I'm afraid I mistrust pump/solenoid systems due to a solenoid failing once before - causing tank overflow.  So I will live with 016.  It may drop a bit lower yet as the membrane is still very new.

Hiya guy's ;)

GREAT IN IT IAN ;D ;D ;D ;D

I also have 1 from gaps...

My tap tds is 600(ish) ppm :o :o :o :o  i know....its high man... ;D ;D ;D

My old merlin produced 35-40 ppm

MY HF5 40/40 produces  11-14 ppm & a lot faster than the merlin...probaly twice as fast ;D ;D ;D

Just my 2p worth ;D

Take care & kindest regards
Justin ;)

The old membrane was a Filmtec one, it used to be ok, taking water down to 15-20, it's 5 years old now though and when I took it out it was pretty slimy, as was the inside of the tube.

Not sure of the water pressure as I haven't got a guage on it but it's fairly good, on an open tap it's running at around 10ltr per min into a bucket.

I still need to get an auto cut off solenoid fitted but not sure what bits I need to do it or where to get them from, any help would be appreciated.

I also got a HF5 with pressure of 42psi so just managed to get my booster pump connected up ... takes it up to 5.2 bar about 75ish psi now filling my 1000 litre ibc rekon it will take about 12 hours compared to 3 to 4 days.

is that 75 psi on the pump guage or the filter guage? just asking as my tap psi is 80 but when it gets to the filters it about 50psi, so i was thinking about getting a booster pump

Tap TDS hovers either side of 200 usually.  I'm getting 100+ litres an hour with water pressure of 40 - 50psi (depends how much I tweak the waste outlet).  Bear in mind I'm on a water meter so it's about balancing the water bill, the resin bill, and the membrane life.
It's possible that the figures may be explained by the fact that there is an RO in the next unit from me (a twin 4040).  Although the outlets from the mains are separate, it could mean that to some degree the supply is shared in terms of pressure and flow.  Indeed, the pressure does drop down to 20ish psi for brief periods when, presumably, someone is using water even further down the line.  This is only the odd few minutes here and there that I've sometimes noticed.  I know the pressure drops temporarily when next door is flushing and I'm equally sure that my flushing does the same to his RO.  However, these are relatively brief periods so probably wouldn't have a major overall effect.  It may be that I would need to quadruple my water bill (by opening up the waste a lot more) to get TDS at a good level.  However, I'm not prepared to do that.
I have DI after the RO.  I've done my sums before on this.  The extra resin would cost far less than the higher water bill.

gauge on booster pump shows same as gauge on prefilter setup maybe couple of psi difference but pretty much the same ...pump kicks in too boost it to about 75psi and then stops until it drops back down again
