Bought a box full of carbon & sediment 10' pre filters from cleaningspot....
Noticed my psi rose latley & put it down to thicker water with cold conditions :

Now when i went to change pre filters on my 40/40 ro...the carbon filter had folded in on itself....   EH!!!!  seemed to unravel itself......
Now iv been onto cleaningspot & after a few words,im gunna send them pic's & if they need filter i told them id post it bk
Anyway i bought a few,so i put a couple off new 1's in tonight to flush system as my water is 600 ish ppm.....
And guess wot...psi rose to 60 then 70 then 90.......normaly only on 20psi with drain open :
So deffo a blockage...took new carbon filter out & the full inside was sticking out the top...can you belive that....i only run 60 psi tops
They are cheap...few quid,is that y do you think?
Just gutted as i dont know what crap bin going into membrain
I'm gunna post some pics morro as i need to post pics ov bluebird heatscorce for gav ,probaly as i have to send them to cleaningspot so need to be onto it....

Anyone elese had this problem??

Probably not a problem if detected quickly but if it's letting tap water through in that state, it would start damaging membranes within a fairly short while.  I reckon they could get stung for membrane replacements - a cost that they should pass on to their own supplier or the manufacturer.  I know it's not their fault but the retailer is meant to carry the can for such things and pass it on up the chain.

They have sent me new filter's out,just got order confermation :

But i have just mailed back to say i'm still concerned that some damage may of occored   (crap speller  )

Anyone got any idea were i stand here....
I mean i was running the old filter for 4 weeks before i changed it & noticed gauze inside was folded over....this carnt be good for membrain @ 600ppm....
I mean i buy,we all buy these pre-filters to protect our systems & they should be tested etc...

Anyone clued up on this situation im in??

Another mail from cleaningspot-

we just had a chat with our supplier and it would be great to get some pics to forward as we will then get replacements as well and they can tell us if this causes any damage to your system

Running these filters, damaged like that, is shocking guy's

Who knows wot damage or what has entered membrane???

It's not the TDS  you need to worry about (pre filters do not remove this) it's the chlorine that the carbon filter "may" have let through to the membranes, as it is chlorine that damages membranes.

Yeah,i know wot ya mean bud,but if my tds is 600 ish,wont that mean theres a lot of crap...eg chlorine etc in my water man....??
I know the filters dont make a diffrence to tds bbdl mate,but wont they be a load more of it (chlorine etc) with my water being so hard, going through membrain?

Also bbdl mate....how would i tell if any damage is or has been done man??

The purpose of the pre filters is to take out the crap that can damage the membranes. The first (sediment) filter removes sand and rust particles, the carbon filter removes chlorine ( and perhaps some other stuff) the membranes deal with everything else.
If your TDS after your membranes has gone up a lot then they could be damaged.

Justin, if the  sediment filter is after carbon filter it is the wrong way round, but if your carbon has gotten out it will probably have been stopped from reaching your membrane by the sediment filter.
The water from your tap should go like this.   Water -> sediment filter -> carbon filter -> membranes -> DI "if you have one"

It could be a hard thing to prove - especially if the membranes have been in quite a while.  The classic symptoms of a membrane being shot are a fairly rapid rise in TDS accompanied by a fairly rapid drop in pure water production.  By rapid, I mean perhaps even over several days.  If the membranes are already pretty old, it would probably be a bit greedy to demand brand new ones.  However, if I felt that a pre-filter that was sold to me by a supplier was faulty, I would have no problem in trying to negotiate a discounted price on new membranes - roughly proportional to the reduction in lifespan.  Of course this can vary a lot.  If on the other hand the membranes were nearly new, I think it would be reasonable to expect a new replacement - or in any case, only paying a peppercorn price.  I have found that one good way of resolving any disputes is to reach a point where the difference between two sides isn't so huge, and each side give some benefit to a charity.  That way, even if someone feels that they haven't got all that they should have, they at least know that a charity rather than the other side got the benefit.  It sweetens things up a bit.
Of course, it may be that insufficient chlorine got through to cause membrane damage.  I suggest you monitor post RO TDS and water production more closely over the next 3 - 4 weeks.  However, do ensure the RO has been running for a while because the first few litres out can be at a higher TDS after re-starting it.

The system is only a couple,well few months old man...so realy quit new
I did however notice a drop in product water,but this could of been a result of less psi,because of the fault...i have had to adjust my drain etc to get low tds...but as i said paul,this could of been down to filter blocking water channel ...thus reducing pressure....
I'v read ya post & took it all in mate..
I'm going to mention to cleaningspot,that i think it could of caused damage to membrane & i think they should  consider replacing it (didnt buy system off them)

as long as the carbon block is intact then it should be fine.

the paper filter is only there for systems where there is no sediment filter as thats what the paper filter over the carbon is

You should flush your system every time it is used.  My system flushes automatically for 30 seconds before and after each time it is used (automatic system), it will prolong the life and increase performance of your system.

Yeah al mate,i try to flush it everyday,used or not,just for a few minutes a day,especialy with my water being 600 (ish)
Sometimes i havent needed to use system for few day's,but i still like to flush at regular times....
