the proper way to clean something. how do you find out?
« on: November 17, 2010, 11:22:08 pm »
been doing some H&S stuff this week and realised i don't actually know the proper way to do many things and i'm unsure how i'd find this out.

for instance, i've always thought the best way to vacuum stairs is to leave the vacuum at the bottom and go as high as possible. then if you can't reach the top few do it from the top of the stairs coming down. ths is probably very wrong as you're walking backwards down the stairs.

is there like a training course that i could attend for these things? I remember at a previous place of work someone would come in and show us simple things like always run vacuum cable through fingers whilst unravelling it checking for cuts. this is the sort of thing i'd like to know.

Ahh blow it out yer cake, tree hugger  ;D ;D, just kidding pal. Do a BICSc course. Its great for all the basic health and safety stuff but I would'nt get too bogged down with it. Just look after your eyes, hearing and lungs, skin etc so wear suitable ppe. You have to start at the top and work down ofcourse. Things like good dilution ventilation and not leaving hoses or leads trailing and having them serviced by a lekky regularly is often advised. Theres lots of pointers on housekeeping etc. Get a pamphlet or info booklet on the contract cleaning sector. Ive got lots in many different languages, they are great.
Sorry about that tree hugger crack.

Hi Surrey,

Neil is actually correct.

Just get a leaflet that reads and tells staff what to wear for appropriate tasks. Mixing chemicals - wear Goggle (I don't know anyone who does).

Gloves to be worn etc. However you must have these provided and accessible to your staff and they must fit accordingly to them.

However,

If you are not referring to the safety aspects and are referring to the correct way to clean certain items i.e. toilets then there is a book by BICSc - You can purchase it. You don't need to be a member and its about £40.00.

The manual is a Cleaning Proficiency Manual

There is a correct way to clean everything. Well the right way is generally for quickness and results.

i.e. vacuum cleaning. Would involve checking the cable for nicks and damage. Checking the bag is not full. Checking that the pipe is not blocked. Checking that the PAT TEST date has not expired. By the time the cleaner has done all this you have just added on about 15 minutes overtime each time to use the vacuum cleaner. So in the real world you need to be realistic as the client wont pay for all of that.

Then you can get into FLOW cleaning. Which done right will save time on labour and clean the building quicker.

You can also get into the aspects of Size. How to clean a multi storey building... in the quickest time to be competitive with great results. And use the correct number of staff.. sometimes more staff can actually cut down costs providing they work together correctly.

Adam, just email me if you require further info mate

Sorry Dave,

Just have to disagree!

Good advice about the cleaning Proficiency manual, the reason for the manual is to ensure that the correct methods and procedures are followed all the time, thereby ensuring tasks are carried out safely and quickly.

Any task that is not carried out correctly, exposes the employer to the real risks of poor performance, and non complience with Health and Safety.

Rob

Ah yes totally agree with you. I was not very clear there. Obviously common sense is required and obviously the need to follow H&S regs.

I will remember to never forget to make instructions idiot proof from now on.  ;)

Keep it simple, trial and error your way to finding a quick and efficient method.
Also, best tools for the job - cheap stuff is a false economy in my experience.
