hi,
     Im new to this site and have a problem :does anyone know how to clean limescale off a granite worktop. the limescale is mainly near the tap area, i could get it off with a limescale remover but it would damage the granite. Has anyone come across this problem? Does anyone have any ideas? thanks

This can be removed either physically with fine wire wool, stanley knife blade or chemically with a weak acid solution. Wet the area with the acid using a cloth and rinse with plenty of water

Best I would use fine wire wool and go gently

Mmm,Id be interested in the replies on this,I use limescale remover,but Ive noticed theres a rainbowy look on the surface, and am wondering if the limescale removers done this??

Use the wrong cleaner and you could etch the surface then you will have to re-polish and this will be expensive. I use the product and never had a problem. Just test on a small area first and follow instructions.

 i wouldn't risk using wire wool or a stanley knife on such a delicate surface. the limecale is only quite light on the surface. I have used a granite cleaner spray and a toothbrush but no luck.

Speak to the suppliers then if you wont use wire wool (Fine) as they (some) recomend it. We do it all the time.

If you are worried in that it will scratch it ot remove the shine it wont. How do you think the polish stone?

As an alternative use Vingar as thats Acidic and you need an acidic solution to remove limescale.

try a bit of vinegar and salt  this will help dissolve limescale the just work this into a paste with a damp cloth then wash away loads of water did this last month tried it at home  dont use wire wool mat as well take an hammer to do the job then use wool

Sherco has the correct answer here.  Aqua Mix Phosphoric Acid Substitute will remove limescale off granite.  Do a small test area underneath to make sure you have a true granite and not a Basalt.  True granite is not Acid Sensitive

Great answer by Sherco, I'm gonna go back and study that one again, very technical indeed. You said you were using a toothbrush. The bristles on the toothbrush wont provide any real degree of agitation so you will be relying on chemical and time to remove the stain. If you use the wrong chemical you will harm the surface, if you use the wrong agitation i.e steel wool, scourer, you will scratch the surface. To harm or to scratch, that is the quesion? Ok you have that tooth brush, now get a green sponge, like the ones they sell in LIDL. There has to be one near you, theyr'e springing up like jack in the boxes. get a used lidl sponge if you have on as it wont be as agressive a newer one. Put some waterbased cleaner one the stain. Cif would be the one I'd try. Put the sponge on there. But dont use your hands. Push the back of the tooth brush into the yellow part of the sponge. It will increase the psi ( pressure per sq inch ) at that point. Move in a circular motion. It should take it out unless its been there for years but if its not working do whar Shergar said and get Kim and Aggie out with a team of rocket scientists
