Rug on Karndean floor
« on: October 07, 2010, 09:20:51 am »
Doing a job next week that includes a very big rug that is on top of some Karndean flooring,Its too big to take home and do or even to move to clients garden to do outside. Will it be OK to clean it position on top of the flooring.

I believe that unlike lamiante flooring Karnden isnt affected by moisture,is this right

Wayne i would place a  tarp sheet under it i also like to vacuum both sides before i start you could then place the snail under the rug to dry

Is it very dirty?

if not you may be able to use a little prespray as possible, good agitation and extract, perhaps splitting the rug into areas so the presparay isnt allowed to go to far down.
you can ptotect the edges around the rug with towels or the like.

I clean my rugs on my Karndean floor just don't over spray teh floor or you may slip ALSO if you use pre sprays you may strip the finish.

Karndean is not a porous material & in anycase can be cleaned with an average alkaline cleaner diluted in water.   So there would be no problem even if you did overspay or were crazy enough to let your prespay soak completely through the rug

Wayne use a sheet like i said if you do get any overspray on the floor you could cause a problem for yourself mate.

Francis what if the floor has a topical sealer on it and the chemical you use removes this causing a problem? for the sake of a £3 tarp sheet not worth the risk IMO

What is a topical sealer?  It is a sealer that protects a surface from water and oil based contamination.    Anything that you in your right mind as a rug cleaner are going to use to clean a rug is going to be pretty much mild compared to what a topical sealer is intended to withstand.

But fair enough, if one is nervous, use a tarp underneath

Karndean and Amtico flooring are basically Vinyl tiles. They come with a clear factory finish. Over time this wears off and they start to look dull. They then usually have someone apply an emulsion polish. This is a sacrificial polish which requires stripping off and re-doing periodically. If the floor has had this done then any  high ph pre-spray will strip the polish off. Even some neutral products could cause blemishes. Moral is if cleaning rugs, on no matter what surface put protection underneath.
