Canvassing help needed
« on: October 06, 2010, 04:02:35 pm »
Hi, recently started up as a WC. Have dropped quite a few leaflets but only
minimal responce to date. I am a bit concerned about knocking on doors as almost
everyone around my area has a sticker on the dooe "NO Door to door sales etc".
Or am I worrying about nothing and should just ring those bells ?.
Any advice welcome.

Your not a door to door salesmen, your window cleaner. I ignore those stickers. Go out smartly dressed, shaved and hair groomed (first impressions) and ring those bells and ask them did they see your leaflet and would they like your service.I canvassed like that and pick up loads of work.set a price in your head £1 a window or £10 for a semi and stuck to it,folks will try to barter but stuck to your price,If they already have a window cleaner apologize for wasting their time.I found the best time is sunday evening between 7pm and 8.30pm.

I was a bit iffy about it today when i saw a sticker on the window..

i walked up then pathway to the door read it then walked away ... then did another house with a sticker on and thought sod it.

Ive canvessed for Dr windows for approx 4 hours and already got him £100 worth of work in the 4 hours...

Knock on the door

"sorry to distrub you do you have a window cleaner"

yes - leave them a leaflet and say if they let you down give us a ring bl abla ba

no- sell yourself.

Just think sod it the worst they can say is no to which you reply ok thanks for your time.

I did have an old woman today refuse to take the flyer

"can i leave you this incase your WC lets you down"

no you cant i dont want/need any help ive not had it for the past 20 years im fine by myself.

I think if you carry your drivers license or some form of  ID to show the old folk you will get a better response.

i show them my driving license i had to ask an old dear for my license back  , i gave it her to look it (my name adress etc...) she kept it in her hand whilst taking the flyer off me.

I was a bit nervous of canvassing first time i  went out. But i went with a friend who is a window cleaner and has been for over 30 years and i and followed his lead. this is what he told me to say:

Hi there. SORRY TO DISTURB YOU.. I am just calling round the neighbourhood asking people if they would be interested in having a reasonably priced, regular and reliable window cleaner.

If they say no - or they allready have one.. Then i would say.

Ok thats no problem i will leave you one of my leaflets just in case your window cleaner ever lets you down or if you need anything else doing on your house because i also clean conservatory roofs, gutters, fascias, and i even pressure wash driveways, patios, and decking. if you are interested dont hesitate to give me a call, or look at my website for further information...

That first day i went out with my friend we were canvassing for 2 hours and we picked up £270 worth of work.. 3 gutter cleans, 1 conservatory roof clean, 7 regular window cleans, and a small patio to pressure wash.

I then went out canvassing on my own every other night in the summer for 2 hours and 2 hours on a saturday afternoon and Within 3 months my round was at £1100 per month..

I have found as long as you are polite, well dressed and groomed, And you leave them a professional looking leaflet, and have a good website then a fair few will contact you at some point to have something cleaned.

I dont even do that.

Smile at them then say

"sorry for disturbing you do you have a window cleaner ?"

IF they are old/and a bit dubious so to say pull or your drivers license and show it them it'll ease there mind(what i think anywya)

if they say yes just go can i leave this with you (hand them the flyer)

if they say no sell it to them

Get straight to the point and dont waste their time, you'll get through more this way and wont be wasting your time if they say no.

what area are you in ?

Do a leaflet drop first.  A few days later knock on the doors.

NEVER ASK THEM IF THEY'VE GOT A WINDOW CLEANER ALREADY - they'll tell you soon enough but why give them an excuse to get rid of you?

Have a clipboard with one of your leaflets pasted on it.  Hold up the clipboard to show the leaflet and say "Good (morning/afternoon/eveving) My name is .......... and I put one of these through your door a couple of days ago."

Wait for the response.

If they've seen it, they already know who you are and what you do.  If they've got a window cleaner they're happy with, they'll say so - just thank them, ask them to keep the leaflet safe in case their chap ever lets them down.

If they've no intention of paying for window cleaning, they'll tell you - saves you wasting your breath going through your spiel.

If they show even a glimmer of interest - start telling them all about it.
