Urine odour problem
« on: August 27, 2010, 09:37:34 am »
Morning all,
I did a job last night for a customer who,s child had an accident on a tufted bebroom carpet, I cleaned to with in an inch of its life and use craftex deodoriser neat on the affected area as the smell was still present after the first clean. when I was finineshed I and the custi could not smell anything but have been told this mornin that the smell has returned and is just as bad as before! I have ordered some urine neutraliser and will try again when it arrives, Is ther anything else I could do? I think maybe the urine has sunk into the backing as the stain was about 24-48 hours old when I tackled it

Cleaned with truck mount first time, then went back and tried M power, then went back and tried clensan from prochem sprayed on left and just vacuumed out cusromer still gets some smell through. Going to try this from John Kelly next week.

Think Clinton is right though.

Peter

A couple of things to bear in mind. When you were cleaning the carpet you probasbly masked the smell of urine. As Clinton says the urine is now probably trapped in the underlay. underlay takes far longer to dry out as it doesn't have an airflow to evaporate the moisture out. When the underlay dries the smell WILL dissapear as urine smells only when it is damp.

Secondly your nose has a "memory" and if you think you can smell something your nose will often fool you and convince you that you are really smelling something. Often it's a "false" smell but it can sometimes be true so unfortunately you have to play these issues on a case-by-case basis.

With hindesight it may be appropriate to get more training (if you only have limited training in cc) and realise that Urine Neutraliser should be a first call rather than being a second (or third) stage. A water claw would also be useful (see other thread) if you can't easilt lift the carpet to inspect what has gone on.

when people say they keep going back, is this free of charge or does customer pay extra each time?

Customer shouldn't have to pay extra if the carpet cleaner didn't do the job right the first time round.

Did a job on monday, I put foil tabs under the legs of the furniture. I told the client to leave them on over night. The old dear must of thought it was just for show!  ::) Result, 5 big lovely rust marks on her 100% wool carpet!
I could have easly charged for going back and removing the rust stains as it was her fault for taking the tabs away early!  but it only took me less then 10 minutes to fix the problem yestarday that I waved the charge.

i havnt charged for going back. The smell in my case has been activated by the carpet being wetted by HWE, wool carpet, odour realeased. Its something previous that is in the carpet, the owner does not know as just moved in.
Not knowing what it is makes it hard to deal with. In my case it smell like cat pee but that doesnt mean it is.

Im not going back because i didnt do the job right the first time, the rest of the 3 floor townhouse is fine with no odour. Im going back as courtesy to the customer and on going repeat business. The customer has offered to pay for each visit as realises this is something that can not be taken into account when pricing or doing the job.

I think Rog is right as the way the carpet smells now would not be a problem unless the customer was looking for it.
