UPDATED RE POWRFLITE VAC MOTOR STILL NOT RUNNING TRUE
« on: July 08, 2010, 04:11:57 pm »
Original post - see below for update

Can someone tell me the best place to get a replacement vac motor unit for my Powrflite PFX1350, I had one burn out today. ( Due to design fault, will post some photo's later )

What do I get when I buy a replacement ? just the motor or complete with vac assembly ?

I remember some talk of pattern units being available but can't find the thread.

Very urgent please advise.

Thanks

Paul

Update Hope this is clearer than mud !

I Got a new Italian vac motor unit on Friday afternoon from Weatherby, it looks identical in every way to the original.

We fitted it today but when you fire both vacs up the suction is way down on performance, the question is why ??

The facts

The day the vac motor went down I did run the machine on it's one remaining vac motor for the last job of the day assuming it would have enough suction with the 1 vac motor to get me through with a few extra passes - However there wasn't even enough to pull any water through to the tank, it just fell back down the wand ??

When we fitted the new unit we replaced the sponge seal gaskets at the rear of both vacs because they had both moved out of line, vac 1 ( the unit still working ) had moved so much that it was blocking off the exhaust hole almost completely. - I'm now guessing that it wouldn't work on that single vac becuase of this gasket blocking its exhaust.

I assume this gasket is the cause of the burn out in vac number 2 as its been taking all the strain and this over time has reduced performance in vac 1 significantly as well.

I just want to be sure it's not possible to do something silly when fitting a new unit thats got the 2 units working against each other ?

The new Italian unit definately has more suction than the other unit when tried individually, but the old unit still sounds fine, can they be knackered and still sound ok ? The one that failed on Thursday sounded bloody awful !

So many questions !!! I guess the logical thing to do is take the whole machine back to weatherby and fit another new Italian unit alongside the new unit we fitted on Friday to see if that cures the problem, if not then I will swap for original units ( they do supply both )

Just wanted to get some feedback in case it's something silly I've missed.

Will get my camera back from my dads later to show the gasket problem and how to
cure it.

Thanks in advance guys

Paul

Give Woodbride Commercials a call.  They tend to do best price and have a range of vac motors.  If i were you i would also buy a spare one and keep it on the van.  That way you will only have downtime of minutes instead of days.

No Clinton, no spare unit and no spare machine  :'(

Just rang woodbridge, they want a photo e-mailed with dimensions - doing that now.

Is the motor the same as this.Dont tigten bolts down too much as they will make a grinding sound. Is the second motor actually working with the other motor on ,or just spinning from air flow.Have you checked every possible connection. Are you sure both vacs are wired up seperately to the right switches. Are there any blockages or hose leaks.

It may look the same but there are many types of motor that fit. Some are 1450 watt and some are 875 and almost every rating in between.
I have always found it best to bite the bullet and fit Lamb vac units. If you look after them and don't flood them they usually see the others out many times.
If you run one vac at a time usually the vacuum will 'bleed' back through the non working unit.
If you run two units that are not matched you will get poor performance.
After 20 years of repairing machines I have found there is no cheap answer- you may save a few quid on replacing bits but if you lose a day or more work you are losing far more.
Woodbridge commercial are about the cheapest supplier - the others buy from them anyway.

I'v read your post and from what I can gather when you fit a new vac the seal is moving out of position or soon after new vac sounds terrible. Correct me if I am wrong.

I have had seal moving out of possition if it did not cover all of the flange...eg it was to small an area and got sucked into the vac due to heat and not enough surface area to hold it in possition. If it is only an inch wide or so and does not cover the area of the mating surfaces it's no good.

Secondly...when fitting any vac motor, the distance tubes (these are the tubes surrounding the mounting bolts including washers) must be of equal length. The securing bolts must not be over tightened, just nipped up so that the neoprene seal is squashed slightly. The neoprene seal must cover the whole mating surface.

If the distance tubes are of unequal length or one bolt is overtightend this will put strain on the motor to one side and dislodge the fans and knock it out of balance in no time at all causing the sound of a screaming banshee ;D

In other words take care when bolting the motor and it should last for years
