Walked for the first time!
« on: July 06, 2010, 10:23:48 pm »
Went to quote in a flat around 6 months ago for carpets and main bedroom had various make up and fake tan stains, Gave a slightly higher price as it was first floor flat, poor parking etc etc and she didn't get back to me. Her mum phones me last week asking saying she wants them doing so booked the job in. Got there today and it was a lot worse than I remembered and had also added lots more. I was tempted to ask if she actually ever manages to get any on her face/ body ::) Carpet was wool and she has danced with the devil and added lots of 1001 and scrubbed lots :( Her mum is a lovely little lady from the phillipines and bless her wasn't quite getting me when I explained that after cleaning all the stains were likely to still be there. She said that's ok just clean and what you don't get out she would get on her hands and knees and if by magic remove herself ???  It pained me to turn the job away but my gut feeling told me to and it just had trouble written all over it, I am sure that although she said go ahead when she saw the final result she wouldn't have been happy and we would still be going around in circles now ::)
I feel better for getting it off my chest now would you have done you same?????

Rich ;D

i might have tried one or two of the stains just in case they were water based, sometimes you can look a real hero when they come out as clean as a whistle,

Rich Always be prepared to walk as no one owns you as you are self employed.Just think of all the times someone cancels by txt as you are on your way to the job(or even at the door when you get there)    I rarely consider this option but have used it when necessary .Its a personal thing so you choose when it suits you mate.Regards Alan(swindon)

I have walked away from jobs more than once Rich, and not always because of the condition of the carpet, sometimes because of the attitude of the person who owned the carpet. I am self employed, my own boss and I work for whoever I choose to work for.
I know it's not easy walking away from work and what interested me most about your post was the fact that your customer was a Phillipino. Of all the nationalities I have worked for the Phillipinos are the people I like working for most. Such lovely friendly genuine people, they always make you feel so welcome.
However ,some you win, some you loose.

This is one of the aspects of running your own business that i love, why should you do something you dont want to, you have no boss telling you what to do, unless your married ;D

As Colin said, i would have attempted a couple of the stains/marks to see what results could be expected. I was called into a hotel to do some spot cleaning on Monday, one of the rooms i went into i though OMG here we go.  Spots everywhere 9/10 came out. Think most have walked from a job at some stage or another.

Richie.

Rich nothing wrong with walking away from a job if you have doubts.

You may well have found you would have had a phone call at the time you were busy to go back. :)
