MERLIN
« on: September 03, 2005, 09:50:10 am »

Got the van now building my own WFP so would like your thoughts please.

How do you rate the Merlin RO unit, is £300 an ok price.

What other RO units are worth considering, live in soft water area.

  Cheers

Iv`e got a Merlin paid £329 for it so £300 is a good price, they are a very neat compact ro,i just use the standard pressure coming from the mains, and my tds readings are 315 from tap then 28 after Merlin,if i add a booster pump i can get my tds reading down less than that,i can produce 20 litres in 11 minutes and again if i add a booster pump i would be able to produce more water a lot quicker,i would reccomend a merlin especially at that price for how much water they can produce,Gaz.  ;)

3 to 1 , thats the thing i gotta look at , i will have to use 1000L to get 250L of treated , i imagine i will be using 500L of treated per day soon , so thats 2000L of tap water per day , that will cost me £8 per day then i still have to use resin on top of that .
If i was to just stick to resin alone it will cost me £2 a day for tap water and in the region of £8 per day in resin .

So you see its very close costing   RO + DI = £8 ish .
                                                               DI= £10 ish .

IF , i have done my sums right , does it warrant the cost to set up RO at the moment , or should i leave it to when i get a property without a meter ?

I am soon to be looking to move , what you reckon ?

Hello P @ F

There are more advantages with using resin only than just less water usage.  For example, the speed that you can produce pure water.  Its not unusual for a resin only system to completely fill a 1,000 litre tank in around 25 minutes.  (It will literally fill as fast as the water will come out of the tap)

Also, a resin only system is much simpler than RO, and therefore there is less to go wrong.

AND don't forget, that you can fill a resin system anywhere, for example from a customer's tap.  If you're on-site and run out of water its not a big problem.

The costs seem similar (once you've taken into account the waste water cost with RO).  Don't forget, using RO costs money as well - there are pre-filters that need replacing periodically and also the membranes themselves don't last forever.

(It's possible to fiddle with the waste water output of all RO units, not just the merlin, but this greatly reduces the membrane life.)

With tap water of only 100, which is pretty soft, I'd probably just go for a DI system.  Much less hassle, and the speed of production would swing it for me.

Cheers Philip , thats what i wanted to hear really , when i take into account what the water and resin is costing me against the amazing jump in each days take since the wfp purchase , i can totally justify the cost of DI only , and i forgot to mention that 75% of my work is in an area which has TDS of 44 , i have 4 customers there who let me fill up my tanks if i need to , so that in itself has just halved my resin costs , a bag of resin should do me for 10,000 L of pure , 500 L per day = 20 days per bag , a months work really .

DI ONLY IT IS THEN ! !    ;D

if you use two 6x 35 di cannisters in line you can split a bag of resin between the two one to fill tank one for polishing .
your resin WILL last longer
when the polisher resin is running out swap it to become the filler then put new resin into that one that was filling and that  become your final polisher

R/O allways use a 40x 40 , i think they are better will last for years and produce better quality water and you are more able to tune them to get the balance of good to bad water

i tune our twin r/o systems to produce five liters good to one liter waste we normally get it to make between 6-8 liters a minute but we have good flow rate
