sales people

I must say I am very fed up with ignorant people, when they ring they ask to speak to the owner/director of the business which of course is me and my husband, so obviously I say speaking, they then get excited and try to sell me the product or service, which I must say few of them I would buy because I need it for the business, however I always advise my partner who is not just my husband but also a business partner on whatever is going on and we make a decision together when it comes to making an investments for the business.

Well of course you can imagine how they react when I say that, they go all stroppy and angry, you can just hear their voice change in matter of seconds and of course I am not going to buy now anything from them when. But what’s worse for some stupid reason I feel really bad afterwards for wasting their time.

I never treat my customers like that, to me it's just being disrespectful, if i treated our customers this way we would be broke by now, surely those sales people must understand that's not the way forward.

I know exactly where your coming from, When they ring my mobile I tell them I'm just the man on the van and they must speak to HQ so they ring the landline and the missus either winds them up in a ball or is so abrupt they hand up. I have also been known to develop a ssssssstttttttttuuutttteeeeerrr and they soon hang up. Its the ones who lie about being from google with the promise of getting you on page one of google for 10 terms of your choice that get on my ****

"yes your speaking to the owner of the business and before you start your speel i get 10 calls a day from people trying to get me on page one of google or are wanting to discuss my mobile or landline phone or want me to put an advert in a charity mag for police fire service or others, i can honestly say i have never dealt with any of these calls and dont intend to, if you wish to waste your time then i'm quite willing to carry on talking, but please remember what ive just said so you won't be dissapointed when i say no, now then, your turn to speak "

if i'm not busy i like to try and keep the liars on the phone as i think every minute they're talking to me is a minute they aren't talking to someone else. i understand the need to cold call as it does work, same with mail shots (if that's the correct word), just not lying whilst doing it.

the fact is that sales people that sell all day every day, fall into two categories,

and

those that cant, and then move on to something else.

its just an opinion, as without customer/clients nobody has a business.

Martin I completely agree with you but I didn’t write this post to say that sales people are bad, many of them are very pleasant and I spare my time to speak to them and truly listen to what they have to say. I often do it when I don’t have time to do so, but just because in a way i feel guilty not to because i know that those people only doing their job just like you me and many other in business. I have a lot of respect for what they do.

However after being very polite and listen to what they have to say and most of the time I am genuinely interested in their products but do not wish to purchase it right because I advise my business partner on all the purchases we make, does that mean they have turn nasty to me? There is no need to be this way, we get number of customers who say I will get back to you and in many cases they do, if I treated them with a cold shoulder and an angry attitude I’m sure we would not have any customers by now. People need time to think to make a valuable purchase, and that’s what they don’t seem to understand.

Am I missing the point here or something may be after all I should be more like those people, arrogant and careless?

no we shouldnt be arrogant, or rude or any other negative towards aour customers, and i totally agree that 9 times out of 10 the phone call comes at the worst possible moment.

however a strong sales person doesnt take NO as the first answer, the job being to convert the lead to a sale, and some sales trainers see a NO as a step toward getting a sale !!  as ridiculous as it may sound.

i remember about 20 years ago sitting in on a meeting where someone was selling a directory listing, and the bloke was polished, professional and a very good salesperson, he knew his product, the service that was bing offered, and every possible deal that he could do.

the problem now, is that telesales people sit with a phone headset on, and a pc screen in front of them, and just work through name after name, and a lot of them dont know, and really dont undrstand the role they are playing. apart from the need to sell x number of units per a fixed period of time.

and then these type of people gve everybody else a bad name, so it just makes the job harder and harder.

I agree and think it's very important to distinguish the type of sales I do from the type of sales that the people who annoy me do.

When I'm selling a cleaning service or product, the person I'm selling it to knows that there will be no hidden catches, that there will be at least a minimal expected level of service and that my aim will be to create a relationship contract between my company and that of my client. At all times in that relationship, I'll remember that they have chosen to spend their money with me and that they will choose not to if my treatment of them falls below their reasonable expectation.

People who phone me up with ad space, mobile phone deals or byzantine ways of saving up to £40.00 a year on my toner are trying to get me to make a decision over the phone and to do it within their time framework. I'm a business so if I'm naive enough to say yes to something like that, the legislation which protects unwary consumers isn't going to apply to me and the Unfair Contract Terms Act is only going to jump in if it's something truly outlandish in the terms and conditions to which I've so rashly committed.

So, with all respect, I'm not going to compare what I do with what telesales people do. I offer a product and service which is compared with other providers at the leisure of my future customers and I won't ask them to trust me on the basis of my simply knowing their name and contact telephone number.

The significant difference is what is being sold.  If someone does not have confidence that their product is of the same standard, price, or value then they will hire teams of sales people and train them on the "hard sell".  Thier hole mission in life is to make ACC.  Attempts, Contacts, and Contracts.  It is a sales mathmatical formula.  If you have not heard of it, it works on averages.  The sales manager caluclates how many contacts (people actually picking up the phone) it takes for a specific telesales person to make a contract.  Then they figure out the average amount of attempts at calling that sales person needs to make that many contacts.  I have seen numbers as high as 500 attempts per contract.  In the real sweat shops they will have a sales manager with a timer.  They time how long between calls, they time how long they talk to a contract, and at times will give you a signal to hang up or terminate as it is taking to long and they need to get to the next call.

Some of the folks that we get upset with are just doing what they are told, they get rude because they hate their job, but they got to food on the table somehow.  The ones we should really get upset with is the telesale manager, although when the guy on the phone gets rude it is hard not to vent on them, might as well, especially if they get rude first.  I had unicom call me to get me to switch my phone lines.  I told the guy, hey you call me twice a week and I turn you down each time.  He said, well we want to save you some money on your phone bill and he went right back into his sales pitch, so politely I told him that the answer is still the same, I am not interested.  He said ok, I understand I will call you back next week.  He hung up before I got to be a little rude.   

I have to admit that it is nice when I get the phone call from a trained sales person who believes in and knows his product.  Is not looking for answer before I can even see it or look over the contract and if I am interested, will come by the office to finish the sale.

We have 2 ears and 1 mouth ,unfortunately most sales people do not use them in that proportion.

How many times a month do you get the mobile phone contract call, charity calender that you said you'd advertise on and never did or the firm that says they are google and will put you on page one for £xxx. I'm sorry if I'm ignorant or rude but I treat them with the contempt they deserve
