As Neil says.
If it is rust then a rust remover should remove it. Most suppliers do their own version and it should pretty much dissolve it on impact, just rinse thoroughly.
You mentioned some are possibly wood as well, had limited results with wood dye/varnish removal.

I've always used Stapro rust remover as its always worked for me so stuck with it.
Can't speak for the others but would say that essentially they all do the job required.

If the bottom of the furniture has a mettle stud then this would be a rust mark and can quickly be remove with any of the above recommended products, however, if you have no mettle stud then the mark is varnish which has bleed into the carpet, and if this is the case you do have a problem!

If you put tabs under the furniture and told the customer to leave them there for a couple of days, it's their problem.  Your visit should be chargeable.

The rust removers mentioned above would all work, they're all phosphoric acid based I think.  There are a few rust removers which contain hydrofluoric acid -  much more powerful but dangerous, you need gloves etc and to use it very carefully.

i had one today where the leg of a chair had got wet and the stud had rusted but also the wood-stain of the chair had run down as well, the rust came out easily but couldn't get all of the wood-stain out, always a problem,

I Have to agree with Jim here, I make a note of telling the customer what i've put under furniture, I also normally make sure it's out of position from it's footprint and recommend removing the protector no sooner than 24hrs and re-position. If someone has taken those out and something appears it really is not your fault. I did have a similar problem with a wood dye stain and solved it with prochem's stain pro rinsed well with fibre and fabric rinse. I still have no idea why it worked though.

I'd be careful with vanish you could leave a much lighter spot, test first. You might try water soluable nitro mors (paint/varnish remover) rinse well with water. It's a nice jelly consistency but again test first. Best I can think of, wait for other suggestions though.

For the wood/dye stains, a reducing agent boosted by steam might work.

wood stains can sometimes be removed using a damp white towel folded double, apply a very warm iron, not hot to the towel for say 10 seconds lift the towel to see if there is any dye transference, use another clean area of the towel over the stain and re-apply the very warm iron for 10-15 seconds to clean part of towel, and more stain should be transferred to towel, and carry on until stain is gone. Most important that the iron is not too hot and the time on the towel is limited from 10-15 seconds otherwise you could scorch or melt carpet fibres if it's a nylon carpet

it will be the dye from the sofa legs i would treat it as if it was a dye stain and just use a stain remover
