I have just had a link exchange request from a cleaning company that I hadn't heard of before, which isn't unusual. When I looked a little closer, the return link they were offering was already an established link on Chris Straker's site, if I had been lazy, the programme would have confirmed the reciprocal URL, giving them a free inbound link from my site. If Google visited my site, this link exchange would appear in favour of them only, with no inbound link. >:(
Really cheeky, watch out!

Thanks for the info.
I don't use link machines as I don't believe all these reciprocal links are worth much these days.
Your SDC site has been battered by Google, any idea why ?

I have done all of the checks and scans, no linking to dodgy sites, broken links etc. I created a local trades reference page, with local names and addresses of mechanics, plumbers, painters etc etc.
By doing this, the particular town name cropped up too many times on the page, as soon as I had published this, the site dropped, and has remained in the same sorry position. I have removed the offending article and cleaned up the site, but as yet, have seen no change, I also submitted a reconsideration proposal to Google.
I know that sites should be about the end user, that's why the reference page was created, I am surprised at the severity of the penalty/filter. I had spent hours on content creation (unique) too, I hope that sooner or later it returns. I am luck that I have other sites that are developed and working for me. I think Mark Shannon has the same problem.
My host people were hacked into around about the same time, perhaps that has a bearing?

It seems very harsh to penalise you so hard but I suppose that is the reallity of search engines.
My Manchester site virtually dissapeared for a year, whereas other very similar sites were completely unaffected !

Yes Spencer languishing on Page 5 for all search terms.
Rewritten entire site to get rid of spam and make sure content unique, as much was duplicated from old Piranha pack.
TWO RECONSIDERATION REQUESTS NO LUCK :(
Thinking of getting rid of recips as seo guy says they are at best worthless and at worst detrimental to site.

Reciprocal links were known to be on the way out going on two years ago. A lot of people built their backlinks completely on them three or four years ago and did very well on this method.
So it's back to the drawing board and spreading the risk. What if Google next week decides to ditch forum sig. backlinks or non entity directories? Where will you stand?
Those who got in early with setting up domains have done very well on the age factor of their sites. As the competitions sites age they won't be able to rely on this quite so much and have to do what the new kids on the block have had to do to get ranked high.
Thank goodness nothing stays the same.
