well maybe not the real big boys but the ones with half a dozen vans . i heard a tale about one the other week. apparently the boss spends his days driving around in borrowed cars to check on who is doing what, who is and who isnt cleaning. he uses borrowed cars so the workers dont spot him .the woman who told me said he even goes round looking for ladder marks in the gardens, ;D i bet its a nightmare owning a biz that size, bet the "lads" get up to all sorts eh

He should just get trackers fitted to all his vans.

so how is he meant to be sure that his business, yes HIS business, is running right and that his staff, yes HIS staff are ok. Personally I wouldn't borrow cars, but the guys were always told that we will spot check at any time. A) to make sure they are ok and B) to check their work.
Prevention is always better than cure
One day when you consider taking on staff you will feel the same, believe me.

its very hard to keep track on things when you have a few vans running round, mostly comes down to trusting your staff no trust no job!!

Sounds like he may have staff that that he doesn't trust to well. He could have employed cheaper staff, but this ends up costing more in the long run because he's taking up valuable time having to spy on them constantly. Sometimes it's worth paying a little more for staff you can trust and who respect you.
If that's the case that is, he could also be a little over protective of his business. I'd have thought he knows the business well enough to know how long it should take them to do the work.

trust is difficult when 9 times out of 10 it will be a stranger , its difficult so spot checking is defently a must or having a team leader usually some one who has earnt there trust.
they can over see the staff their in charge of!

I think random phonecalls to customers to check they were happy would be enough to keep people on their toes.People can take the pee though.I used to work for a bloke who told me he turned up one day to check on his team of workers and they were all asleep on the floor.Not a great impression had the client walked in.
