I've only just started out so not relevant to me, I currently have my trusty Fiat Doblo.  BUT, my best ever van was an Escort van, bought for £1000 and I thought it would last 6 months before it started to cost me.......it lasted years and never missed a beat, I sold it for more than I paid for it too  ;D

A Datsun Cherry hatchback.  At 988cc, it was a bit embarassing going uphill when the cyclists started overtaking.
Although I had owned it for four years, the engine was on the way out when I started W/Cing with it.  It got me through the first 8 or 9 months though till I got a loan for a three year old Nissan Sunny van.  Such vehicles were OK for cleaning the trad way.  No good really for WFP though due to low payload.

My best experiences with vehicles have all been Japanese.  I will take that route again nect time I make a change.

VW sharan people carrier. Only been going 4 months wfp and it was the motor I already had. Lucky I had that really as I nearly got a focus estate that would only have carried a small amount of water.

Good thread!

When I first tried window cleaning in 1996 I used a 1987 Volvo 340 1.7 petrol saloon which was great but which would inexplicably "die" randomly every few days and which I never got sorted. It would always start again after ten minutes or so but it would be awkward if you were in town on a roundabout etc! The tank was drained, the fuel filters cleaned, carb checked, pump checked but it never played up when you were working on it. That lasted two weeks and so:-

First window cleaning car was a 2.3 petrol Volvo 240 Estate "D" reg (1986) when I started in 1996. It had electrically heated seats (well, only the driver's one worked), a manual choke and I managed to eke 28 mpg out of it.

Next was a Honda 2.2 Automatic Accord "J" reg (1991) with aircon which I bought in 2001 and which was the first car I did WFP out of in 2005 with a 175L tank and a couple of 25L barrels. It was rubbish on fuel and 22 mpg was about it.

It got written off by a French lorry driver in 2006 and I put the £500 payout (LOL) down on my (then new) present Fiat Doblo 1.3 diesel (45 mpg) which is on lease 'til October 2010.

I learned to drive in a Reliant 3 wheeler so having passed my motorcycle test and so was able to drive it on my full motorcycle license,
there were no actual roof bars to carry ladders so i made some from blocks off wood bolted straight through the roof  ;D

Toyota Previa. Didn't have a roof rack, so I stuck the borrowed ladders inside and poked them through the sunroof...   :-[ Then had a Fiesta van. Now I use a Berlingo car.

My very first car was a marina.  ;D They were basically an updated morris minor. I thought it was  a pretty good runaround (despite top gear's views), but doesn't compare to a good car today.

When I first set up I used my company car which conveniently had roof bars (cheeky me)

But when I left I bought a Citroen AX 2 door, did me well til I went WFP
