WOW thats some comparison...fireman-window cleaner ::)
-
I am not that far off a fireman i've a ladder and a big hose!
-
I think you'll find they're a band on the run (Wings joke) but not actually banned yet. Hence why Homebase, B&Q etc still sell them.
-

Not banned but I reckon that if you used them all day for window cleaning and obeyed the letter of the law, you would probably wish that they were banned.
-
In some countries you can be EXECUTED for using ladders.
And, if you just mention them, they let you off with life in prison.
-
its all about been safe you are supposed to check your ladders each day make sure they are safe to use and take as much precaution as possible to ensure your safety and employees if you have any and thats where the headache really begins , so we all go wfp saves the hassel

Firemen were banned from using poles!
(Joke. The ones they slide down to get to their fire engine quickly.)
-
if they banned them i see a lucrative new business....illegal ladder dealer.......drive up to the guy on the street corner, mention a code word.........get the lucra, and off i pop.......just watch out for the fuzz, man..........mind you i will need to invest in a ford capri and stick the ladders on that, and i would probably need to invest in a fur coat too and dark glasses...or am i thinking that dealers only ever worked in the 1970's? ::)
-
I can see it now, pull open one side of your jacket (sheep skin, not fur) to find a selection of pointers stitched to the lining.
" 'ere mate, wan'a buy a ladda?" ;D ;D ;D
-
Ladder use is restricted, not banned.
The practical implications are that if you have an accident involving a ladder and you have not put the correct procedures/ risk assessments/ safety devices in place then your insurance may not cover you and you could end up being sued by anyone injured as a result of your actions.

As martin606 would say: "Proof please..."
-
ladders ARE illegal.....end of !
I guess the 1000's of Sky installers will be struggling to get your dish set up, or do you want them to use a pole aswell, not to mention the umpteen other trades that use ladders. Like i said before, most ladder accidents are the fault of the user which has even been admitted on here by WFP users.
Speaking of admitted, a padded cell was mentioned for you earlier, you better sign yourself up ;D
-
I think as long as you are not on the ladder for more than 20 mins you are ok.
Any longer and it has to be fixed..........
-
Ladders are not "band".
Singer, guitarist, bassist and a drummer...that's a band.
-
lol....excellent...
-
i had sky fitted in my new house last week i was talking to the guy, they drill a anchor point in your wall and secure there ladder to it when they hav done they fill the hole with silicon all down to health and safety hope this helps

ladders ARE illegal.....end of !
If I wrote my thoughts about that reply, "I" would be baned. ::) ::)

Ladders are not banned
Ladders can still be used where it is reasonably practicable.
Which means time over cost and effort.
If you still use ladders that is your choice and it isnt illegal.

Myth: HSE has banned stepladders
April 2007The reality
We have not banned stepladders - nor have we banned ladders! Despite this, the allegation is regularly repeated and some firms have fallen for the myth and acted upon it.
For straightforward, short duration work stepladders and ladders can be a good option, but you wouldn’t want to be wobbling about on them doing complex tasks for long periods. A large number of workers are seriously injured or killed using ladders and stepladders each year. So:
Yes - we want people to use the right equipment for the job.
Yes - there are some common-sense rules for using them safely.
But no - we have not banned them!
This was said in April.

Well do your worse then !

ladders will never be banned end of story

dont be too sure on that.. if the EU has anything to do with it.
When Britain gets out of Europe then you can say that.

how come painters can stay up a triple extension all day long?
-
it does seem strange that out of all the jobs out their, it seems that only window cleaning is where their use is frowned upon.
I see that sky tv have made steps to ensure their installers are safe up a ladder, the installers have to drill into the wall to attatch their ladders to the house to stop their ladders slipping away, and I can't see that they could do much more than that, short of putting scaffolding up at each house.
However I saw a BT engineer climbing a ladder and then the telegraph pole, now couldn't BT use a vehicle mounted cherry picker on 99% of their telegraph poles?
Seems to me the only trade you ever hear about ladders being banned in is window cleaning?

ladders are not banned. ::)
-
no there not banned but lots of people seem to think they are.
and window cleaning seems to be the only trade that the myth of a ban has had an impact.
-
Probably something to do with the water fed pole and the promotion of the same.
-
The h&s in this country is very strange and they basically have put down many GUIDELINES that help you to follow there recommendations, so ladders are not categorically banned, HOWEVER if you have an accident with ladders, you will be in the wrong as you probably were not using them safely hence you had an accident :) So the owness is on you the ladder user, or employer to limit there use when practical or not use at all, and when necessary to use them take steps (like sky) to make sure there is no accident , pluis wfp is around and does a good job for 90% of windows so that is a good alternative for maintenance cleans, etc
I dont understand the debate all the time - seems very simple to me, at the end of the day use your common sense, if something seems risky dont do it
-
As above, safety is common sense and risk assessment. As said, if it seems risky and risking the chance of a fall - chances are..........it's risky and you could well fall.
-
For my two penneth the reason window cleaners are at a greater risk rather than other professions,e.g sky installers,is the speed at which they work.Time is money for self employed people so its tempting to cut corners to get onto the next house as quick as you can.The window cleaner down my road fell off his ladder and broke his leg last week overreaching.People who earn a wage can take their time more.

SJD09,
I completely agree with what you have stated.......... :)
Health & Safety must be paramount in our line of work.
As for if they are banned or not, the fact is "ladders should only be used on any building classed as a place of work if there is no other alternative". In saying that, on Commercial work this should be common practice, reducing the risk of any accident from Working at Height (WAHD) using ladders.
Obviously eye bolts, ladder stabilisers, ladder footed also reduces the risks of the ladder moving or slipping.
I use ladders & waterfed pole system, and on every Commercial premises submit Risk Assessments/Method Statements & Insurance documentation detailing which method will be used for different areas of their building.
I DONT THINK we could all agree on this subject, but all i will say is - Health & Safety is the most important aspect of my business & I cut no corners for myself, staff and members of the public.
So although there is always a place for ladders for window cleaners, the waterfed pole system is certainly the best thing to be introduced into our industry since i started cleaning windows over 26 years ago !
