Title: Winter gloves.
Post by: john tomkins on October 26, 2007, 03:32:49 pm
Winters approaching so thought I'd get a decent pair of gloves this year, looking back over old posts it seems the Omnipole gloves got a lot of praise for warmth and lasting well, touch on the bulky side but acceptable for WFP.
Also looked at Sealskinz and unger but didn't fancy getting a new pair every month coz they wore out :o
Ended up buying a pair of Omnipole for just over £26 delivered, what nobody who bought them in the past mentioned it they are Showa 460 pvc insulated gloves and can be had for the grand price of  £12.99 + £3.95 P&P (free delivery over £14.95 so just buy 2 pairs ;D) to name just one supplier.
http://www.mstore.co.uk/acatalog/industrial-work-gloves.html#a23

What you dont get are the cheepo liner gloves that Omnipole send out, probably get them somewhere for 10p :P

All in all though a good useable glove that should last and last

Ronnie, I am so glad you said that, the unger black ones do make you hands colder, what you need to do is have wet hands before you put them on then when you work you hands warn up as the movement makes the water inside warm, well thats what i found anyway, for the past few years I just didnt bother..

Why was you wearing them the other morning  :o I still wear shorts most days  ;D

I find that wearing gloves makes my fingers colder after a while and end up taking them off..

That's the point of this post.
Try out the gloves that Omnipole sell(Showa 460) @ £26+  but get them elsewhere for £10 less ;D

Oh and they may look orange in the photo's but are actually a terracotta colour

With any gloves, make sure your hands are warm to begin with, that way the insulation the gloves provide help to keep your hands warmer for longer.
Now and again, as your fingers begin to feel the cold, thaw them out, get the blood circulating in them again and put your gloves back on.
Numerous methods of warming your hands up from the inside out...which is the best way.

Basically, just hold your hands loose and throw your arms around your body in big arcs. the blood gets forced into the extremities once more and your fingers are nice and warm again.
The body doesn't like to waste energy, so closes down the blood flow to the non essential bits (insofar as either living or dying is concerned!) force open those capilleries and blood vessels again and you're in business!

Forget neoprene gloves. They're full of holes quicker than a call girls tights. I use sealskinz gloves. They are waterproof, breathable and hardwearing. They've never seen a seal in their life though. So strange name. Thay do socks also, which are great if you tend to get wet feet at all. Couldn't recommend them enough!

I was looking at Sealskinz (as in my first post) but general view doing a search on this forum was that they DON'T last :(

How long have you been using yours?

I bought two pairs and used them all last winter. They're as good as new! Whoever said they don't last must have them confused with a neoprene type glove. I got mine from http://www.windowcleaningwarehouse.co.uk/shop/products/workwear.html

if they last 5 months I think that it would be money well spent as it is not expensive IMO and how often do we wear gloves anyway.

I also found these aswell on there:
http://www.windowcleaningwarehouse.co.uk/shop/products/workwear/sealskinz-socks.html

thats a great idea, I am going to order some as I hate getting cold feet hands are used to it, but me feet are another kettle of fish (I used to put plastic bags inside my socks with a little water in when my feet got to cold)

These gloves are good providing there being used for WFP use, using them for trad cleaning is a no no.Regardless of them being or saying that there waterproof they don`t keep your hands dry when cleaning trad way.

Just a quick search gave these posts, ok also found lots of positives but lots saying they dont last :-\

I tried sealskin last winter, got them a good £10 cheaper than the shops from an equestrian store on e bay
They were great with the added bonus of keeping your hands dry even if you emmersed them in water.
But they did'nt last too long before they begun splitting around the thumb joints.
Quote
Last year i was using Sealskin and thought they were great. BUT the only downside i found about them were they aren't hardwearing enough.
I went through 4 pairs last winter and at £25 a pair it was a bit expensive.

I bought a couple of pairs of Sealskinz gloves for window cleaning, as they're made from "porelle" and are waterproof.
www.sealskinz.com
Though they are warm, they did not prove to be waterproof for very long.  I used them for the 2nd time today and they leaked.
At £20 a pair I am most unimpressed.  Especially as they say "for window cleaning" on the packet.
Anyone else had this trouble?

I have killed unger neoprene gloves in 6 days and sealskins in aprox 3 weeks. I use blue builders rubber gloves from homebuild at £2.37 inc vat they last aprox 8 weeks but a lot cheaper than the other two.
Cheers Jason
