I'm new to this game and wondered if any of you more experienced guys can tell me what you say to potential customers when canvassing, any tips welcome.

This is what i normally say and it works ok
Goes something like this
Hello are you the lady/man of the house
Hello my name is paul (giving them a business card)
I clean windows in this area every 4 weeks
Do you have a reliable window cleaner
If they say yes
I say ok thankyou i will leave my card with you incase you every need a window cleaner in the future.
If they say no
I say i could give you a free quote now
they then either say yes or no
When i leave i always say thankyou for your time whatever the outcome
I'm no expert at this but it works for me
Paul

My outfit for cold calling - collar and tie, thin sweater. trousers not jeans, shoes not trainers. Smart enough but not OTT! No ciggy's if you smoke! Relaxed, open friendly stance.
Best times Sat 10am to lunchtime - any teatime 4pm - 7pm except Sunday
Not when it's belting down - you just look desperate!
Opening line: (Smile)
"Hello there, I'm (First and last name), the local window cleaner, I clean your neighbours windows (gesture to relevant houses) hope I've called at a convenient time - I've got one or two spaces available on my round - have you got a reliable window cleaner?"

Collar and tie :o What the hell is that ;D
I thought those things were only for weddings and funerals :-\
But generally yes, be clean, tidy, open, friendly, polite.
I would agree with the times too, good replies from both Paul and Malc.
