Title: Brand new van for one man operator ?
Post by: Clever Forum Name on March 06, 2016, 08:27:59 am
My mate has decided to swap from trad to WFP.

I have tried to steer him into dispatches, customs, vivaros but he is looking as berlingo, combos.

So what smaller van would people recommend.

I was thinking.

Combo
Berlingo
Connect

Is there anything I have missed. I don't really know a lot about smaller vans.

Any good deals for new vans smaller ones ?

I came across new combos for like 9k for him ! Seemed a bit too cheap. Plus bay obviously.

Failing that 1-5 year old vans ? Is it a scudo? People say are good ?

Connect. It needs to be the T230 preferably the 110ps but the 90 is doable.

DOH! Yeah never thought about the older connect.

I will get him to have a look at them. Thing is i dont want to look at second hand vans with him. I would feel terrible if i looked over a van and said yep its fine  :-X Then blew up  ;D ;D

Fiat doblo or doblo maxi

He's part time and only doing 3 days a week.

Converting trad to WFP. I think he would only need a 350/400L tank.

They have several cars. So will just be a work van I guess.

Will look at dobolllolllo with him.

Apart from a new one. Is there a specific doblo to look for ? Engine ? Payload ?

I used a 2008 doblo with a 450 tank in , was well suited as the van has a 700kg payload mine was 1.3 diesel and returned high 40s mpg

Ditto my 56 plate one. (736kg payload) 1.3 diesel. Still going strong with DtM having bought it and having a 400L tank on board. Even added a trailer for six months at one point!

Is the engine in the doblo the same as the combo.l?

I had a 2006 combo 1.3cdti and the chain snapped at 66k ! Got a gut feeling they are.

It is. The Combo uses Fiat's engine.

I have learned that having a cam chain is great because there are no belt changes obviously but  that the sump is small (3.6 or 3.8 litres from memory) so be religious about oil and filter changes on the time schedule regardless of miles and oil levels too.

Strange no one has mentioned vw caddy ?

Good van, nice place to sit and built-proof

caddy - low payload, poor spec (most still have wind up windows)  horse cart rear suspension, there the most expensive because of the badge

Good and bad in all vans, I've got a customer that had the new shape VW Caddy for a few years but was pleased in the end to see the back of it. Was an expensive lesson.
