Do you ever deliberately put in ridiculously high prices because you just can't be arsed with certain jobs.
I can't stand cleaning internals, whether it's on domestic or commercial, so always price high.
I have some very well paid work off the back of this, but still don't enjoy cleaning them 😩
-
Yep - and still they come in ;D
Just send the boys out to clean anything I hate doing ;D

Yes, recently put in a price for facia/gutter clean which was pretty black, started to write price on business card and decided I didn't really want to do so increased it, so far so good haven't heard from them.
-
It seems comon practice for most to put in silly high prices on jobs you don't really want to do then hope prospects don't say yes.
Needles to say it's also common to win work like that you don't really want but at least the price being high makes the hassle worth your while . However after saying that their is nothing worse than undercharging on jobs as most will hate doing them for the reward so can easily end up running around like a headless chicken?
As the saying goes "work smarter not harder" as you can pick and choose.

I prefer to overprice jobs I do want to do - it makes my job a lot more enjoyable.
But I know what you mean. I've got some ridiculous jobs I the past that I never thought I'd get.
Talking of pricing I've got an existing customer who I've cleaned for about 3 years, he has just bought a brand new, massive house. It's got lots of Georgian sash windows, two glass roofs (I know NWH would have a field day with them) and a load of balustrade glass. High roof dormers etc etc. So I quoted him a 8 weekly price. Heard nothing for a few weeks and got a text earlier saying he's had a quote for £90 LESS per clean and if I can match it the job is mine. I politely declined and explained my reasons and he said he will think about it and come back to me. A while ago I would have lowered my price etc and tried to keep it, but they're just not worth it.

Exactly bud.... Stick to your price to make it worth your while or don't bother doing it at all I say.
I've had people come back to me weeks after giving a high price so obviously having a good reputation counts too.
-
If you mean I'd have a field day with them are you referring to me saying I'd do the odd roof for free, let's get something straight the reason some of my very very affluent customers get the odd freebie is because I am getting very good price already for what I'm doing there that particular day. If I am getting in excess of £100 an hour why wouldn't I do the odd bit of glass on the roof for free or unblock the odd downspout why I'm up there, yeah I could say that'll be £500 for 4 hours work please oh and don't forget the £300 for the dozen or so panes of glass on that little roof I've just cleaned in an hour or so,I don't think so sometimes you've got to give a little to get a lot.

I quoted him an 8weekly price lol oh my lord oh I would love to compare some of my domestics with some on here.

The thing with jobs like this is that the only difference between the quotes is the other guy will work for less money. He'll probably do just as good a job. Maybe even better. We've got a carpenter coming to fit a front door. He reckons it'll take him a day. £180 labour. I wouldn't get out of bed for that.

Whats so 'lol' about quoting him my 8 weekly price? Compare away mate. We've got a £12 8 weekly bungalow ranging up to a £270 4 weekly house. What matters is they are customers I choose to work for these days, they pay on time, and that we're busy every day.

Normally I'd agree with you 8 weekly. However this particular house is worth just under £4m, my quote was £135, and it wasn't overpriced as he's been a good customer for 3 years and its just down the road from a block of flats we do. The amount of glass there to clean for £45 is ridiculous. I agree re the carpenter.

Because you could be on excess of £130 per hour perhaps?
The reason your very very affluent customers are very very affluent is probably because they don't and have never done anything for free, so they wouldn't bat an eyelid at paying extra to have a glass roof cleaned.

If your anywhere near London the chippy is quoting well under price.
Should be more like £300+ per day.

Yeah exactly. I should have said the price.
He text me saying 'its a competitive market here I've had someone knock on the door...', to which I replied 'I wouldn't say it's competitive necessarily, there's a few very cheap window cleaners out there............... if you're looking to save money on maintaining such a nice house we wouldn't be in a position to take on the work' then I thanked him for his business in the past bla bla.

A while back Matt posted a response to something like this. I can't remember the exact wording, but I liked it. Something like, "he will only be able to do it for that price by being really fast and cutting corners". I would think with that sort of price difference the guy would see that immediately. Tbh, it would have been a much more like to succeed response than yours.

I did say a bit more which made him think but couldn't be bothered to type it all! Reminded him of how reliable and trustworthy we have been over the last 3 weeks etc and I would wonder how a job like that could be done so cheap.. He said he will come back to me so we will see...

I'll be over pricing con roofs and fascias from now on don't wan em!

I'll be over pricing con roofs and fascias from now on don't wan em!
I don't mind fascias as can normally get a good price for them. Conservatory roofs not so high, a normal conservatory roof is about £70, which I think should be more because of the agg and the amount of water they take up. I think people think because the windows seem to be cleaned fairly quickly and simply a conservatory roof is quick and simple too..?
-
i cleaned a conny roof this afternoon(last job of the day).it took me an hour.i charged him £60 but he gave me £65.im happy with that. :)
he was very pleased as his window cleaner doesnt clean roofs.i used very hot water and virosol which helped a lot. ;)

Not always the case, another windy undercut our price for a plush complex last year by over 70% it used to take four of us 3 hours to do a complete in/out clean - he was trad and on his own and took 4 days to complete the site

It's scary isn't it that some people are happy to work for say £10 an hour on a self employed basis and think they're doing well because it's more than they'd get in a factory. That's what I meant earlier in the thread.

I agree with that I've never understood anyone saying £20 an hour is good when you add everything up that's poor money being self employed, just shows you even the people doing this job still don't see it as a business when you here prices mentioned. They want to get out there and canvass a few free roofs like me lol

I have some very well paid work off the back of this, but still don't enjoy cleaning them
I had one today which was an extended semi PITA of a job and did not really want to do it so gave a price of £350.
The price included to clear the guttering, clean all plastics on 3 sides and then clean the windows.
To my suprise they said "YES... when can you do it" so just goes to show you can't bloody win ???
After that quote I went to do that gutter clearing job I was on about Lance for £300 that took me less than 2 hours to do.
All things considering it was quite a productive day... Well 2 & a bit hours of it anyway ;D
-
You'd win if you got someone to do it for £250 you could say to em let me know when your nearly done I'll be round in time to knock for the money lol

Just goes to show one man's cheap is another's expensive.
Not bad living down south then eh

Thats very true actually mate. We had Location Location Location on last night (I wanted to watch Last of the Mohicans but never mind). A 4 bed house in a nice street in Nottingham was £170k. A two bedroom flat beneath us just sold for £350k. No garden, and space for one car. The other flat with a horrible old kitchen and a tiny bit of garden is renting for £2k a month - it wasn't even on the market 3 days! So prices here are reflected on the area.
Saying that £180 a day labour is £900 a week, if he's not buying materials out of that and that is his wage its not horrendous by any means, as long as he is busy every day.
-

london, wimbledon, surrey etc is very expensive.£180 a day is like earning £80-£100 a day up north.my brother rented a house in wimbledon for £1800 a month for years! ::)roll.my rent is £300 a month so he was spending an extra 18k a year on rent!plus an absolute nightmare to park your car!
he s now bought an end terraced house with his missus in surrey for .........wait for it............£370,000!!! :o
i can fully understand window cleaners charging a lot more down south.its house prices/rent thats crippling mainly.

Adam the average UK wage is around £26k a year even thought over 70% of the population don't get anywhere near it
including those that live in the south.
That's why I take comments like that with a pinch of salt, that said we should all be trying for the best price possible
in the areas we work its just common sense.

The thing is a lot of jobs in the public and private sector get paid the same in the south as they would in the north and you with a £300 a month rent bill are going to be in a lot better position to take on a window cleaner and pay a bit more than somebody forking out £1800 a month in the south.
Even in the north there will be properties in affluent areas that will pay more for a trustable service the thing is they are always
the first places to be targeted making it very hard for a newbie to get a slice of the cake.
Its not hard to pick holes in these willy waving posts.
-
I didn't see this as a willy waving thread/post, sometimes figures are required to quantify a position or point, it's upto you if you believe what is typed.
But agree, London/south/commuter belts are so high priced with large mortgages I'm surprised they can afford food never mind a windy, where areas up north still get good wages with low mortgages so have more to spend on luxuries like window cleaning.
( yes I'm aware there are also vast deprived areas where life is difficault )

A month ago they had a bungalow on there I do its on the market for 1.4 million,a complete joke house prices down here rents down here for a half decent place would be north of 1250 a month before you put the kettle on.

Darran
Agreed, the thread itself is a very good discussion point and has nothing to do with willy waving, but as with all these type
of threads there will be some who will use it as a way of pointing out how good they think they are, I just like winding them up
a little. ;D

Had s chap from kempsford call me earlier for a quote on a 4 bed detached, for windows, gutter and fascias.
When I told him the price he said oh it's not just an hours work then ::)roll

Some people have no idea do they ;D
Lance did you get a call earlier from a lady in wroughton wanting a 4 weekly window clean as I gave her you name?
I have no idea of the property size as did not bother asking. If it happens to be a mansion and you get it I will be kicking myself :D
-
I did mate thanks. It's just round the corner from where Louis lives do very handy. 👍
They're pretty big houses down that road ;D

I'll bring you some cheesecake Monday to say thanks ;D

I've just sent an invoice for a gutter clearing job and now the owner wants me to spring clean the exterior of that waterside property I was on about including render walls, wood cladding, decking, windows, wooden foot bridge over the stream and path to the front door.
To be honest I have no idea where to start pricing that lot up but somehow I have a feeling it's not going to be cheap. lol

Just put a price in for £500 to clean a conservatory and house windows ;D
Hoping to god i don't get it, as it'll be the most awkward conservatory i'll have cleaned to date.

You have it wrong, you charge for the Windows and do the roof for free... (LOL 🍾🍻🍺💩💤💤)

I did a quote a while back that I did not really want to do so put in a silly high price. However the chap being a barter type knocked me down in price which stupidly I agreed. Doh!
Anyway to cut a long story short my get out after realising I had been stitched up big-time I said to him whilst I was still on the quote "I will look at my diary and give you a call to book the work in" but never did ;D

No pics, but I will certainly take some if I get the job.

You need to start using that sj4000 camera Lance on quotes...Just mount it on a wfp hit the record button and away you go.
That way you have a permanent record of each job you quote and can save it to a pc and review it at any time.
If like me your memory is shot it's easy to see what needs to be done and can also highlight any issues, access etc.
Once you have the vid saved then can take still images from the vid too.
Here is an example of what I mean as this conny roof in question has a number of issues to overcome. From clearing out all the guttering on 4 sides first then being able to get to clean all parts of the roof too including you guessed it that so say self cleaning glass all going green.
Unfortunately access to work from the flat roof is not an option either as next door is a terraced house with no back access and that fence runs all down that side. Also before someone metions it I would not fit through that window opening either above the flat roof nor go clambering over that pitched roof to get to it...Sod that ;D

Reply from the quote
Hi Lance
Thanks for getting back to me. Obviously £500 is a lot of money so I’ll have a think and get back to you if I want to proceed.
Thanks again
Kind regards
Tracey
Oh bugger! It's not a definite no then :-\
-
I completely get what you're saying Alan, but I just can't be bothered faffing around recording everything and saving it to PC or phone. I do log most quotes on CleanerPlanner for price references

It takes no time at all Lance and you don't even have to connect a smart phone to the camera either when doing surveys on quotes.
Also comes is very handy when dealing with property owners, landlords, management companies that want work doing and are paying the bill. For those that live miles away that don't live at that property address sending quotes via email including survey pics and after pics when invoicing I've found is an extremely powerful passive sales tool.
