Hi all, im just wondering if any of you have ever experienced working with someone who spits there dummy out? I pay a decent wage to a trad window cleaner and at the end of a days work after paying his wages he only makes me £40. I explained that i need to do more work to justify his wages and he spat his dummy out.
i have a target to hit then we go home. usually hit the target in 4-5 hours and he gets £60
should i fire him off and do the work myself? or insist we do more work?

Do you really need this guy ?
How long would it take you to earn £40 extra a day without the hassle ?
I would then explain that to him then give him two options. your the boss at the end of the day.
not many would want to work more, with no benefit to themselves.

It is you, not him. Just look at your title. "Work mate".

I did think that too Steve

Forced to agree with these guys.
"Familiarity breeds contempt".. You clearly believe that productivity can be stepped up, so make it happen.

imo you should be doing 6 or 7 hours before going home. i would simply find extra work to occupy the time and then everybodys happy

Hang on; if I read your post correctly he makes you £40 after his wages. His wages being £60. So my arithmetic makes it that he produces £100 turnover on trad in "4 to 5 hours".
So if he turns over £100 in 4/5 hours and you push off home and you get £40 free and clear I reckon you are doing fine.
Now tell me I've read the post wrong.

...and at the very least you are making the same so you will take home £140.
Just do the hard work with him and then go out for a couple of hours on your own and take home another £ 50.

Hi you say you have a target and you normally hit it in 4-5hrs then you go home. Why is that his fault? you set the target and go home. As the others have said just raise your target figure each day.

£60 a day is a very good wage!
Your not to far from me so I no the going rate in the area
I think he isn't making you enough money to justify
His wage you need to be making at least double what you
Are paying him to make I worth the hassle IMO
I see loads of posts about people being to pally with there staff
And it only causes trouble in the long run
Your the boss not his best mate and you ow no one a living !
That's just my take on employing
Fixed hrs in work for a days pay 8-4
Even if there's no windows to wash the van gets cleaned in
And out to make the day up

I agree with Malc Gold. Not only does he make you £40 but he does £100 worth of work you don't have to do.
If you want him to work longer to earn you more, then he might not be happy or his productivity might drop.
I'd try to keep him sweet; maybe offer a higher rate for longer hours; talk to him about it.
Good window cleaning staff are not always easy to find and I'd be happy with someone doing 60/40, if only for 4-5 hours.
It's enough trad, anyway.

Simply do an extra hour a day, 4 more houses a day is 20 more a week. At £10-15 a house makes an extra £1000-1500 a month coming in. Not bad for an extra 20 hours split over the month. Im sure you wouldnt be complainin then about holding you back as all that extra would be yours as £60 a day is more than enough to keep paying your guy.
Explain to him that its your way or no way.

I like that.
You dont owe no one a living. Ill remember that next time im getting grief. Nice 1 for your words of wisdom. Next time someone moans at me about there not happy about my rules ill say "i dont owe you a living so feel free to up and leave if your not happy". The perfect call my bluff phrase there. Love it

Using the figures quoted your suggesting he does 4 more £15.00 houses a day. By my reckoning trad that's a lot more than an hours work. I get your point but make it realistic before suggesting it.

But Hank Jr. (the OP) set the target. Fair enough, if he wants to re-set it but the lad might want to re-set his work rate.
You can't expect a lad to look at knocking out the work in 4-5 hours and then to stay on to do extra.
If you pay him, yes. But I reckon the idea of 'job and knock' is an incentive for him to get stuck in.

What is unrealistic about 2 guys doing 4 houses between them in an hour??. most could p 3/4 on there own. I know many trad guys banging minimum 20 houses out a day in pairs. It isnt hard mattyboy when 2 of you.
-
That's £75 an hour your proposing. An honourable hourly rate for WFP. This is trad.
Unrealistic. Sorry. ;-)

£8 - £10 houses, not £15
