Title: Is there a superstar I can learn from
Post by: Paul McHugh on November 26, 2012, 05:07:52 pm
Hi every one, waiting for my new hwe kit to arrive, did a days in house training, but really do need a bit of practical tuition perhaps a couple of hours with an experienced carpet cleaner who could show me how its done and how to spot (no pun intended) and deal with any issues, maybe certain ways you can speed it up or start at the top work down or is it dirtiest first etc. What kit and chemicals used mainly
I'm in Selby North Yorkshire so obviously would travel a bit so you know I'm not stepping on your toes and getting any of your customers. I will of course pay for the help.
So is there any Good Samaritan out there who could adopt an oldie and help perhaps Leeds/Wakefield/Hull/Doncaster/etc
Oh ps I'm an old guy so go a bit easy on me  lol

Go on a training course if you haven't already done so, then when your kit arrives do some practise clean on friends and relatives carpets so you get to know how it all works and then see if someone will take you out for a day, that way, atleast you'll know what's going on ;)

The best thing to do is when you get a biggish job to do and either skills wise or size wise you can't do it, pass it on to someone who knows their onions and ask if you can work for them on the job.

Now on the face of it you might not like that idea. You don't just lose the job you lose the client. Your competition may say thanks, now you can pizz off. But you will be surprised how many times this approach comes back many times in terms of knowledge, new work and just having an ally.

Well fellas can't say i was expecting some of the replies I,m clearly naive thinking I could expect some support and encouragement oh and Mike I've just I have just had a CRB check (I thought It Might Be Needed )which of course you are more than welcome to view  and guess what its completely clear.
But guys your quite right I should tell you a little about me, I said oldish I,m 62 , two years of unemployment after redundancy speckled with the odd agency job JSA finished ages ago and in the last four months only 3 interviews without success. Now have step daughter and 4year old granddaughter to support so hey I'm trying
to keep the wolf from the door.
Any way I will do this With or Without help but I cannot deny I am nervous and I sort of think that I would probably help someone if the tables were turned and it wouldn't cost me.
Cheers for That guys

You can come out with me give me call,

How close are you to actually been in business? Have you bought your equipment and van?

A couple of hours would be piontless You will need to spend a full day across here so we can do some jobs, visit some carpet shops and talk about basic marketing,  we can even arrange to have tea with 3 or 4 other carpet cleaners so you can pick thier brains as well.

I'm happy to make the day as intensive as you want.

It has to happen in the next 2 weeks then I'm in hospital

Hey Mike that's a fantastic offer unless your taking the p----
Ordered kit from Nick at Solutions but you may know the jag is in short supply
bought Sebo b36, getting a rotawash and a variety of chemicals sort of trial box.
The wifes car is an estate was going to try with that but I know I need a van But will get one pretty soon
I know its a little childish but I am so so keen to do the job properly and except  Friday granddad duties I'm good to go,   I did do the 1 carpet day course at CleanSmart and followed with upholstery 1 day at there offices in Nottingham run by Derek Bolton but it was a while ago now and its starting to fade from the memory
Email is, oh am I supposed to pm you although not sure how to do that.
Anyway let me know how I can tie this up with you (if its not a joke)
many thanks
Paul

Oh and to the guys who passed over some  positive comments Thank You
oh and Paul (Mr Moss )I think underneath that hard leathery exterior is a heart of granite(joking)

Hi Shaun
I have paid my 50% to Nick

But a little bit concerned why you would want to move it on (And I wish I new that before hand)
Are you unhappy with it / did it do the job properly / ?
could you let me know

Paul, I'd very quickly rethink using the estate car.
You'll never get the machine in one without putting it on it's side, then there'll be 25 foot of 2 inch tube, a wand, buckets, chemicals, vacuum etc etc. Even if you do get half of that list into a car you'll going to look a right pikey turning up and unloading it. I've got a scorpian (same machine really) and a Mondeo (which is a large estate car) and no way without even trying will that lot get in there.
You need at least a small van

Hi Paul

Good luck with it all I don't think I would like to start out at 62 but needs must I guess. Don't ask others about machines because everyone's opinion is different and when you've invested over 3 k in something it's a little hard to slag it off and to be honest all machines have their faults but you only find them out once you have used them over a period of time.

Nice offer from Mike, you should def get together with him, although I don't usually agree with him he is one that you could probably rely on and get a decent honest answer.

As for Paul Moss the less said the better to be honest I don't even waste my time reading his posts as a rule, probably a really successful guy but has a real chip on his shoulder, if you stick around you'll find that he's not the only one.

It's tough out there but there is money to be made.

Good luck

Tony

Hey Tony
what a great post and yes the artheritus is twinging already but as you say needs must and god do I need ! I think it will be tough, I am under no illusions but maybe deluding myself that I can cope,we'll see.
as for the machine it was picked as much for the weight as well as the power at 42kg I believe its one of the lightest and the elbow joints probably cheered at that bit.
I am concerned about the stair kit got a feeling will need more than I have but sounds like Mike should put me straight. But hey 3 cleans in a day sounds like its going to be seriously tough but I am looking forward to it and still strangely excited by the prospect of my own cleaning business, wonder if I will feel that way in six months?
all the best I hope we speak again

Use it or lose it. If you build up gradually Paul you will be fitter than the average 50 year old office worker and despite worrying about where the next months money is coming from, being in control of your own destiny is one of the best feelings there is.

There are things you need  to be doing right now, get your listing on google places

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=selby+carpet+cleaners&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari

There are only 2 companies listed,

You need a website, if money is tight then MIght be worth looking here....

http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=161125.0

In the begining You need To put out leaflets, start  investigating who can deliver them in Selby.

Don't bother finding out about your 'competition'  looking at the area there is plenty of work for a new company

If you call this morning and it goes to the answer phone don't worry I'm in the sticks so the reception will be bad..... Just call later

Paul,

A Berlingo will be big enough to get all of your kit in but you will soon be annoyed with having to 'move this to get to that'. My advice on a van would be a swb panel van at the very smallest but the I do know some guys who drive Connects (smaller than Berlingos) so I suppose each to there own.

Paul ..Maybe a citreon dispatch size van.

That will give you side doors so its easier to get to your gear..

Good luck with your new venture.

You will benefit lots from the day out working with mike too.

Tim Yes that's me I think Mr Scouser was semi professional comedian as I recall
just getting started now as i manged to pick up a little work after the course
but it didn't last, so in for a penny did I say penny thousands more like.
Did you buy your gear from Mat at Cleansmart what a nice bloke I was tempted but my puny arms struggled with the weight of his machines so gone for a lighter one, not sure that got all I need on order but out with Mike Halliday shortly so will be running it by him. He clearly is the man, loads of experience looking forward to it.
Sounds like your up and running and enjoying it, hey email me  itspaulmc@gmail.com     perhaps we can get Ideas from one an other or maybe just see how we are both doing.
All the best

is that inc vat??? does it come with hoses and wand? im interested..................... joking apart i almost bought a jag, like the sound of them, but i got an airflex which im currently loving to bits, suited my budget, good service ect ect ect, amazing how, when you commit to a bit of kit, lots of options suddenly crop up on the radar.......... ie about three jags came up for sale around the time i bought my airflex........ my next extractor will be either a jag or the top airflex........  truck mount one day??????
