Ok guys, due to the weather i decided to revisit the issue of my next van,
i like the querky look of the Cub/Vanette and the side/payload looks ideal for 650 ltr tank and
having an option of having 2 men setup.
I know a couple of you have had or use these, so are they reliable and whats the parts/maintance costs like.
Not worried that they are slow/basic etc...
cheers

What year ? - Mileage ?

Gutless, under-geared, noisy, thirsty...but I still have mine ;D
-
Dave - so what are the bad points ? ;D
do you have a bulk head fitted ? - i read somewhere it's difficault to get to the engine if you have one fitted
Gav - found it in the used section - looks good, but lots not working on it and mileage too high - seen a few about with 40 to 50 k
thanks for the pointer

I have a mesh bulkhead fitted and getting to the engine is an art...unbolt the console, un-hook all the clips, push seats forward, seat backs forward and then tip forwards.... ;D the mesh bulkhead doesn't seem to affect engine access but I could not vouch for a solid one.
It's just noisy, thirsty but so far it has been a real trooper mine has dual side doors which is a nice feature...taking over anything on the motorway needs to be planned as it is not a quick affair.
But saying that I bought mine 5 years ago for about 4k and it's still going ok but next year will see the beast changed for a another van ...
Cheers
Dave.

Cheers Dave,
Motorway driving is going to be very, very rare for me - don't think Norfolk even has a motorway :-\
2 side doors is very appealing for access and the size is good,
do the poles go in OK ?

cheap enuf though n most things
r minor n cheap enuf to mend ;)

Yeah the SL-X 35 can go in at a angle no issues there and you can get a 650litre tank between the bulkhead and wheel arches which leaves you loads of room for gear at the rear of the van...bang a reel onto of the tank at one of the sides or both and bang another at the rear and all bases are covered...great for 2 blokes but watch your weight.
Cheers
Dave.

Thanks Dave

Thanks Gav for trying :D ... only just seen this post.

whoever said it was gutless is so correct ... cracking van for tradding though just too underpowered for a big system IMHO ... alas van is no more :'( ... gone to a better owner than me probably ;D

When I went WFP two years ago the van that came with the system was a Vanette.
It will always have miscellaneous things go wrong and getting to the engine is a pain the first time but the engine is rock solid.
In the end my suspension went at the MOT and it needed substantial welding so I scrapped it - after two months on the drive it started first time. Very frustrating considering the cost it would have took to please VOSA.
I needed a van quick so bought another Vanette so I could get back working the next day knowing the tank could just swap over. One owner and only 74,000 miles for a T reg.
I hope it lasts long enough before I really invest in a proper van and set-up.
Any questions just ask.

A mate of mine bought one, he is a sparky. the van had had a rough life and used alot of oil. he spent two days racking all the back out to find he couldn't open the engine cowling. All had to come back out. I reckon he's spent more on oil than the van cost but its still going.

i almost got one of them ldv van things till i saw they did 30mpg lol
just got me a beaten up old berlingo s reg 495 notes, will do me for winter as im bound to crash it after just passing me test ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for the input, i know they are not the fastest thing out there, but thats not important to me - it's all lanes and small roads here so bombing down the M way at 90 does not come into it. as long as it pulls with 800kg on board at starts 1st time and isn't rotting from the inside out, i think the shape and size it just ideal for a 650 ltr tank and gear,
esp with 3 loading doors.
+ cheap as chips looking at £1500 for a 51 plate with less than 50k on the clock
the only other concern was spare parts availablity

I used to have a Vanette when I was plumbing and have to agree with the other comments that they are great reliable vans, but it was falling apart thro rust :o
For the last 3 years Ive had one of these and have to say its perfect for window cleaning.......Ie it will carry 1500kg, the back of the van is just under 3 metres so all the poles fit in, tail lift rear door(for sheltering from the rain!)..3 seats... Also fitted an internal ladder rack :)
Mine has done 150000 miles and still going strong :)
Ok, I know its not the prettiest or the fastest, but if its "quirky" you want then these are the van for you and its instantly recognisable to custies ;D

Hose ! lol
yes these are on the list, it's the same as a Mazda i think - might be just a bit big for me, but thanks for the
positive info.
