i didn't want to spend lots of money on a round that could be total rubish so i spent £62 on 5000 leaflets and have been leaflet droping at the end of the day if you do a good job you'll be ok

We all do it.  We're not psychic any more than they are.
Maybe paint the doors red so they can avoid them  ;D .

I dont give a hoot about other wc areas. If i get a call outside my area then i take the job and canvass the surrounding houses, thats business. Like has been said if ya do a good job then you wont lose out to people like me canvassing etc, however do a crap job, well you deserve to lose em.

This can be an annoying problem. If you are a crap cleaner its a worrying problem, if you're a good cleaner its not so much. WHat i do is give them my whole customer list and politley request they do not canvass my work, i also put my prices on the sheets so they know the going rate for the area, and the customers phone number on so they can confirm its true. That way hopefully they won't try to undercut me either. Give it a go, you'll find it works.

Work which was probably built on canvassing and leaflets at some point , down the years.

Why should they have to buy the work?
where would this work (that is up for sale) come from if it wasn't canvassed in the first place?
Also why buy work when you can get it for free by working hard!
When you buy a round you should expect to lose 10%-15% as the cross over from one WC to another is an excuse for customers to cancel, that is nothing to do with the new WC.

Are you sure?
You sound like you have only been in the game 5 months.
If you have been in the game that long you know what the score is when it comes to business!
You sound annoyed in your first post, is this because you are worried about losing customers to other WC's?
If you are worried, you need to ask yourself why you are worried? are you reliable? do you offer a good service? if the answers are yes then you have nothing to worry about.

My customers get canvassed all the time. You just get used to hearing about it. I lose the odd one occasionally to what has obviously been somebody knocking but in the main its not a problem.

as long as you are in the south, theres so many windows but not so many cleaners to go around  .  imagine its harder in the north  but maybe even less cleaners there who knows how many / most work under the radar id think
Title: Re: w/c's canvassing your work!
Post by: geefree on July 22, 2010, 10:34:01 pm
why would it be harder in the north ?, there are the same amount of windows up here ,

have you senn the size of the towns and cities up here ?

Manchester , liverpool, leeds to name a few ... further up.. Newcastle Sunderland, .... and the rest,

its not all fields and sheep you know.

Well , you should be worried lol....

did you not take all this into your business plan?

are you sure that you have been cleanig 5 years ?

Did you not know that there is healthy competition out there?

or did you think , because you bought a round , that no one else can come near the houses that you clean ?

i think you should take another look at how you are running your business,

lets say you wish to expand.... no rounds for sale in your area?

What would you do ?

SCAVENGE....
get real just because you took the easy route and bought customers dont give you any more rights. there are some people on here who have companies you can only dream about and they have never bought a customer.

I have customers all the time showing me leaflets they had recieved and stories of people canvassing the area but it never bothers me,    as Matt points out if you do a good job and are reliable you wouldn't lose that many.

I make it my business to know all my customers by their first names and always have time for a chat with them as PR is very important even in window cleaning.

on the back of my flyers I have a gutter vac pic and also advertise patio cleaning so I leaflet in area's where there are window cleaners but without picking window cleans up I pick gutter and patio jobs up that the current w/c doesn't provide.

did a full conny and patio clean yesterday where the lady aready had a w/c and still earned £135 and she kept her w/c

so they may be leafleting you so called patch but may be offering services your not so stop moaning and just enjoy your job.

As already been said.  If you do a good job you should have nothing to worry about.

For example I was doing a customers windows on Wednesday and her friend came out.  She asked how much I charge for a 3 bed ex-council semi.  I told her £7 which is I think is a fair price.  She said can you come and do mine.  I went yesterday and all the frames and cills were filthy and no edging done..  She told me the couple of lads who had been doing them were charging £4 but would gladly pay me a tenner if I did them like I do her friends every time.  I wipe the frames and cills every time.

After I had finished she told me it always goes to prove you get what you pay for.
